Abstract:This study was performed to determine the correlation between aldehyde dehydrogenase-1A1 (ALDH1A1) level and tumor shrinkage after chemoradiation in locally advanced rectal cancer. This is a retrospective study of 14 locally advanced rectal cancer patients with long course neoadjuvant chemoradiation. The ALDH1A1 level was measured using ELISA from paraffin embedded tissue. Tumor shrinkage was measured from computed tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based on Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumor v1.1 (RECIST v1.1). The mean of ALDH1A1 level was 9.014 ± 3.3 pg/mL and the mean of tumor shrinkage was 7.89 ± 35.7%. Partial response proportion was 28.6%, stable disease proportion was 50% and progressive disease proportion was 21.4%. There was a significantly strong negative correlation (r = -0.890, p < 0.001) between ALDH1A1 and tumor shrinkage. In conclusion, tumor shrinkage in locally advanced rectal cancer after preoperative chemoradiation was influenced by ALDH1A1 level. Higher level of ALDH1A1 suggests decreased tumor shrinkage after preoperative chemoradiation.
BACKGROUND: Excessive smartphones can affect sleep quality, reducing sleep duration. This lack of sleep will impact various health and increase levels of free radicals in the body, affecting various cell functions. AIM: The aim of the study was to measure the relationship between sleep quality due to smartphone use and serum malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a quasi-experimental with pre- and post-test group study. Sleep quality was assessed with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the smartphone addiction was assessed based on Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS) score. The subjects were divided into four groups (n = 6) based on their PSQI and SAS score. The first group was the subjects with normal sleep and non-smartphone addict. The second group was the subjects with normal sleep but smartphone addict. The third group was the subjects with abnormal sleep and non-smartphone addict. Furthermore, fourth was the subjects with abnormal sleep and smartphone addiction. All the subjects were asked to sleep usually and used the smartphone as necessary a day before the study started. Blood plasma was collected from the subject before and after the study for MDA measurement. Plasma MDA was determined using the thiobarbituric acid test. RESULTS: Smartphone use can reduce sleep quality and duration, resulting in sleep deprivation. There was no increase in MDA concentration (p > 0.05) in the ordinary and non-addictive or smartphone-addicted sleep group. Meanwhile, the group that stayed up late and was neither addictive nor addictive showed an increase in MDA levels and was statistically significant (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Adequate sleep can reduce blood serum MDA levels and smartphone use does not affect MDA levels.
Tujuan: Radioterapi dapat mengurangi gejala yang ditimbulkan oleh kanker dengan metastasis tulang. Penilaian hasil pengobatan berdasarkan informasi klinis sedangkan informasi kualitas hidup jarang dilaporkan. Penelitian bertujuan untuk menilai peningkatan kualitas hidup pasien yang menjalani radiasi paliatif untuk metastasis tulang. Metode: penelitian kohort prospektif dengan sampel pasien kanker metastasis tulang yang berkunjung ke-4 pusat radioterapi di Sumatera, dari bulan Mei-September 2018. Jumlah sampel adalah 18 orang dengan teknik pengambilan total sampling. Perbaikan kualitas hidup dinilai dengan kuesioner EORTC QLQ C-30. Analisis statistik dengan uji T berpasangan. Hasil: Rerata Global Health Status sebelum dan sesudah terapi adalah 39,81 dan 64,81 dengan perbedaan kuat dan bermakna (r=0,75; p<0,001) dengan rerata peningkatan skala adalah 25. Rerata Functional Scales sebelum dan sesudah adalah 44,32 dan 58,27 dengan perbedaan sedang dan bermakna (r=0,48; p=0,042) . Peningkatan rerata Functional Scales adalah 13,95. Rerata Symptoms Scales sebelum dan sesudah adalah 46,15 dan 29,48 dengan perbedaan rerata yang kuat dan bermakna (r=0,743; p<0,001). Rerata penurunan Symptoms Scale sesudah terapi adalah 16,67. Simpulan: Radioterapi dapat meningkatkan kualitas hidup pasien dan menurunkan gejala secara signifikan, namun memperbaiki fungsi pada sebagian sampel.
