Alfalfa meal and chloroform extracts of the meal have increased the growth and yield of several plant species. A crystalline substance isolated from the active fraction of alfalfa meal increased the dry weight and water uptake of rice seedlings when sprayed on the foliage or applied in nutrient culture. The substance was identified as triacontanol by mass spectrometry. Sprays containing this compound also increased the growth of corn, and barley grown in soil. Authentic triacontanol produced a similar response over a wide range of concentrations on rice grown in nutrient cultures and tomatoes grown in soil.
Preplant-incorporated (PPI) applications of 280 g ai/ha of imazaquin {2-[4,5-dihydro-4-methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-5-oxo-1H-imidazol-2-yl]-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid} had significantly greater persistence than preemergence surface (PES) applications throughout the growing season in 1985. In 1984 there was no statistical difference in imazaquin remaining between PPI and PES treatments. Very little imazaquin was detected below 10 cm in the soil profile for all sampling dates each year. Imazaquin dissipated rapidly both years during the first 30 days following PPI and PES applications. A subsequent decrease in the dissipation rate occurred in the next 120 days of the growing season. Spring tillage had no significant effect on injury to corn (Zea maysL.) planted into the field the year following imazaquin application. Corn planted in 1986 into imazaquin-treated plots of 1985 had no growth reduction when compared to corn grown in plots where zero imazaquin had been applied. However, corn planted in 1985 into imazaquin applications of 1984 had significant injury. Greatest injury occurred where imazaquin had been incorporated, and injury increased as imazaquin rate was increased.
A technique for comparing pesticide penetration through fabric was devised. It involved passing fabric swatches through a controlled spray system and measuring the pesticide residue transferring on and through the tested fabric. Six variations in fabric were selected for testing: 100% cotton woven chambray, Scotch-guard treated chambray, Tyvek, Crowntex, and two variations of Gore Tex. Guthion (azinphos-methyl) was chosen as the insecticide for controlled use in this experiment because of its widespread use and relatively high toxicity. Gas chromatographic analysis of the amount of Guthion transferred through the outer fabric was made by the use of analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Duncan's multiple range test. The ANOVA for experiment replication showed no significant difference among the replications of each fabric. The treatment ANOVA was highly significant at the 0.01 level. Duncan's multiple range test further analyzed the differences in the treatment, and three groups were found to be significantly different from each other. The two types of Gore Tex, Tyvek and Crowntex comprised the group permitting the least penetration Scotch-guard treated chambray followed, and untreated chambray allowed the greatest penetration.

White footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) inhabiting an area surrounding a pond (Tyler) contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and metals (Cadmium, Zinc, Copper) had whole body burdens of 0.42-4.17 ppm PCBs (mean 2.3 ppm) and animals from a comparison nonpolluted site (WCC) had no detectable PCBs. Males and females caught at the polluted site in the winter months were not significantly different in body weight or length when compared to WCC animals, but Tyler animals had significantly increased relative liver, kidney, spleen and adrenal weights. In the summer months, mostly males were caught at both Tyler and WCC sites. Tyler males were significantly lighter than WCC males, and had a significantly increased relative liver weight when compared to the males from the WCC site. In addition, the adult Tyler males had significantly lower relative testis weights. At Tyler there was a significantly smaller proportion of juveniles and subadults in the population than at WCC. Polychlorinated biphenyls levels in the adult Tyler males were significantly positively correlated with relative liver weight, but there were no significant correlations with any of the other structures measured. These results suggest that at the polluted site there is inhibition of reproduction and changes in liver, spleen, adrenal, and testis function.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
