This study aims at discovering the effect of You Tube video project to improve students' achievement in speaking skill including pronunciation, grammatical accuracy, vocabulary, fluency, and interactive communication. It used an experimental design involving 83 Nursing students in Bantul: 44 students of Control group and 39 students of Experimental Group using simple random sampling technique. This study used statistical t-test to discover the effect of using You Tube video project in improving the students' speaking skill, particularly in English for Nursing based on the score of pretest and posttest of both groups. The t test results labeled equal variances in which t-value was 3.077, the degree of freedom (df=81), and t-table was at 1.989. The difference was significant because t-test result was higher than t table. The results indicated that the achievement in the students' speaking skill through You Tube video project was improved.
This study is aimed at finding out the students' needs in learning English, particularly English for Public Health as part of ESP regarding four language skills and some language areas. This study was a qualitative descriptive study with 150 students of Public Health Department as the subjects. The data were collected by using a questionnaire. A semi-structured questionnaire was distributed to the participants to gather information related to the students' needs and wants. The study analyzes the data from the closed questions by using simple statistics and the open question by using interpretations. The results showed that the students were confidentin their Reading skillsbut not in Grammar, they also perceived that writing skill is the most important skill to learn. For each sub-skill, the students perceived that the most important skills to learn are including understanding vocabulary from the context (reading), writing correct sentences (writing), pronouncing words correctly (speaking), and listening to English media (listening). Related to their wants, the students not only learn English to support their academic field, but also to prepare after graduation.
This study is aimed to find out students’ listening problems and listening strategies. The research type is qualitative research using questionnaires and interviews as the instruments. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze data obtained from the questionnaires, and interpretation of coding to analyze data from the interview script. The respondents were 31 pharmacy students involved in English for Pharmacy class and three of them were involved in a structured interview session.
Listening is crucial to understand spoken language and to support the other language skills mastery; however, some students find several problems related to listening. This study aims to determine students’ listening problems and listening strategies they apply to overcome the difficulties. The research type is qualitative research using questionnaires and interviews as research instruments. This research used descriptive statistics to analyze the data obtained from the questionnaires and an interpretation of coding to analyze the interview transcript data. The respondents were 31 pharmacy students involved in the English for Pharmacy class, and there were three of them engaged in a structured interview session. The findings of this study were: (1) the students were moderate-level in listening problems of perception (M=2.91), parsing (M=3.18), and utilization (M=2.95) phase, (2) the students were high-level strategy users in cognitive, meta-cognitive, and socio-affective strategy, (3) the students mostly experienced difficulty in the parsing phase compared to two other problems and applied cognitive and meta-cognitive strategies than socio-affective strategy.
One among many considerations that should be taken into consideration when moving a conventional face-to-face course to a web-based course is learners' needs, which are transformed into a research-informed blueprint. This study addressed the process of blueprint design resulting from the needs analysis process of design-based research. The objective is to describe the designe d blueprint set for a web-based English Writing course for nursing students in Indonesia. The blueprint consists of designs of learning approach, performance goals, learning tasks and feedback, instructional strategies, and web design modules and interface. The descriptive statistics were used to test 37 items scored by experts of ESP and Writing about the blueprint. The results of Expert Judgments showed that all items obtained mean at the ‘Good’ categories. It means that the blueprint can be used in conducting the next stage, which is website development.
