Cysticercosis is a tropical infection caused by the larval form of Taenia solium and is usually known to affect the central nervous system. We report a young man who presented with a swelling in the neck and was treated with surgical excision and antihelminthics.
Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare histiocytic disorder, usually presenting with massive lymphadenopathy. The involvement of extra nodal sites, bone and nodal sites like mediastinum are rare. Clinical data of three cases of extra nodal RDD who were admitted in our Pediatric Hemato-oncology unit were analyzed in the last 5 years. The extra nodal RDD (maxillary sinus, nasal pharyngeal focus, and external auditory meatus) were diagnosed based on histopathology and positron emission tomography (PET) scan. They were treated with steroids, but were refractory hence requiring salvage chemotherapy. Currently all 3 of them are in complete remission. Extra nodal RDD are difficult to diagnose, and histopathology and radiology play an important role. Here we present three cases, of which two were steroid refractory which were treated with salvage chemotherapy and are in complete remission.
Euthanasia or assisted suicide has been a matter of contention for many years with various types of euthanasia including
voluntary, non-voluntary, involuntary, active and passive euthanasia being argued for around the world. This article
highlights the types of euthanasia while analyzing the ethical, legal, economical and spiritual dilemmas surrounding them. It also compares
euthanasia laws of countries around the world with the Indian stand taken by the Supreme Court in legalizing passive euthanasia. There exists a
ne line between life and death. It is the duty of a medical practitioner to assess these situations critically while preserving a patient's autonomy. To
deny a person the right to end their life with dignity is equivalent to depriving them of a meaningful existence.
Infective endocarditis is an infection commonly caused by bacterial pathogens and is known to affect intracardiac structures. We herein report a previously healthy man who presented with complications of infective endocarditis caused by Enterococcal faecalis and was further managed with appropriate antibiotics without the needed surgical interventions.
Gastric volvulus (GV) and wandering spleen (WS) associated with eventration of diaphragm share a common pathological cause of absence or laxity of intraperitoneal ligaments. We herein report a rare case of a 13-year-old child presenting with an acute GV, WS, diaphragmatic eventration and an ectopic ascended kidney managed with a laparoscopic approach.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
