The feeding habits of Rioraja agassizii (syn. Raja agassizii) and Psammobatis extenta (syn. Psammobatis glansdissimilis) of the South-eastern Brazilian coast were studied by means of stomach content analysis. The samples were obtained on eight seasonal oceanographic cruises, carried out between October 1985 and July 1987. The importance of each food item was evaluated on the basis of the Index of Relative Importance and the feeding similarity by Percentage of Similarity. The results indicated that both species are benthic feeders, preying mainly on Crustacea, especially Amphipoda, Caridea and Brachyura. Teleostei were also important for R. agassizii. Seasonal variation of the diet seems to be associated with the availability of the prey, whose distribution and abundance are related to the dynamics of the water masses of the region. Juveniles and adults of P. extenta exploited the same resources while juveniles and adults of R. agassizii presented low diet similarity during most of the year. Caridea were an important food for all length classes of R. agassizii, while Amphipoda were for smaller specimens, and Teleostei for larger ones. The feeding overlap between the two species was higher during autumn 1986, winter 1986 and winter 1987.
This study provides the first detailed information on the reproductive biology of the smooth butterfly ray Gymnura micrura. A total of 905 individuals were sampled, 377 of which were used for the reproductive study. Juveniles accounted for 75% of the sample, but all life cycle stages were present in the study area. The disc width at which 50% were mature (W(D50))was estimated at 269 and 405 mm for males and females, respectively. The W(D50V) (based on the onset of vitellogenesis) was estimated at 359 mm. Uterine fecundity (mean ±s.d. = 3·8 ± 1·3; range: 1-6) was positively correlated with female size. A 3564% gain in mean wet mass was observed from egg to full-term embryo in utero. Size at birth ranged from 135 to 175 mm W(D) (19·5 to 55·0 g), with a mean of 165·1 mm W(D) (43·3 g). The embryo sex ratio was not significantly different from 1:1. The ovaries of pregnant females were undergoing vitellogenesis during gestation, with females ready to ovulate soon after parturition. Gymnura micrura may have an asynchronous reproductive cycle, with females reproducing continuously throughout the year.
ABSTRACT. Centropomus parallelus and C. undecimalis are the most common species of Centropomidae in Brazil. Some authors attribute their failure to grow under in artificial conditions due to limited knowledge on the morphological and functional development of their digestive system and on nutrition requirements of both species. Current research characterizes histologically and histochemically the digestive tract of C. parallelus and C. undecimalis to provide a histophysiological assessment for studies related to their nutritional needs. In the esophagus, the mucous cells in the epithelium stained positively for PAS and AB. In the stomach, positive reactions to PAS and negative to AB respectively occurred on surface and mucous cells in the epithelium and in the lamina propria. In the intestine, goblet cells showed ratio similarity, with mucus being positive in AB and PAS. A greater concentration of these cells existed in the middle and distal intestine, with a greater increase of secretions when compared to those in the proximal intestine. Results show that C. parallelus and C.undecimalis display the main features of the digestive tract of carnivorous fish, a well-developed stomach and a relatively short intestine. In fact, they give insights for future studies on the mechanisms related to the species's digestive and absorptive physiology. Caracterização Morfológica e Anatômica do Tubo Digestório de Centropomus parallelus e C. undecimalis RESUMO.Centropomus parallelus e C. undecimalis são as espécies mais comuns de Centropomidae no Brasil. Alguns autores atribuem o insucesso no seu cultivo devido ao escasso conhecimento sobre o desenvolvimento morfológico e funcional do sistema digestório, assim como o desconhecimento das exigências nutricionais das espécies. Dessa forma realizou-se o presente trabalho, com o objetivo de caracterizar histológica e histoquimicamente o tubo digestório de C. parallelus e C. undecimalis, para estudos histofisiológicos relacionados às necessidades nutricionais deste peixe. No esôfago, as células mucosas, presentes no epitélio coraram-se positivamente tanto em PAS como em AB. No estômago, as células superficiais e mucosas presentes no epitélio e na lâmina própria respectivamente, apresentaram reações positivas em PAS e negativa em AB. No intestino as células caliciformes apresentaram similaridade na proporção entre os mucos sendo positivos tanto em PAS como em AB; nos intestinos médio e distal observou-se uma maior concentração destas células, resultando em uma quantidade maior de secreções em comparação ao intestino proximal. Através dos resultados observados, concluise que o C. parallelus e C. undecimalis exibem as principais características do trato digestório de peixes carnívoros, como um estômago bem desenvolvido e um intestino relativamente curto. Estes resultados darão subsídios para futuros estudos sobre mecanismos da fisiologia digestiva e absortiva desta espécie.
Summary The purpose of the present study was to analyze the diet of the smooth butterfly ray Gymnura micrura using qualitative and quantitative approaches to describe the feeding spectrum as well as ecological aspects related to feeding and niche width. The rays were obtained through monthly sampling as by‐catch from bottom trawl fisheries in northeastern Brazil from August 2007 to July 2008. A total of 286 stomachs were sampled, of which 176 contained food items. G. micrura is a predator in the region that feeds intermittently on large whole prey items, followed by a long period of digestion with simply little or no feeding activity. A low diversity of food items was found in the G. micrura diet, with an absolute predominance of teleosts, especially the roughneck grunt Pomadasys corvinaeformis. It is suggested that the species has a narrow feeding niche and a high degree of specialization. This presumed high degree of feeding specialization is discussed and the findings are compared in light of similar studies for closely related species, allowing to propose the family as primarily constituting piscivorous rays.
This study reveals the food composition of pelagic fishes living in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. As such more common pelagic species are considered to be top predators, the study proposes to know what constitutes their main food. Fish are not commonly found within their stomach contents, but instead, cephalopods are their most common food. As can be observed, Teuthida cephalopods compose their principal diet. The stomach contents of specimens of Xiphias gladius, Thunnus albacares, T. obesus, T. alalunga, Isurus oxyrinchus and Alopias superciliosus caught during July 2007 to June 2009 by using tuna longliners were studied. Teuthida cephalopods constitute the main food item for the three tuna species, while X. gladius feeds mainly on Ommastrephidae cephalopods. Though the differences among the kinds of cephalopods exist, they constitute the principal resource these fish use to live at least in the southern Atlantic Ocean.
