. The objective of this research was to evaluate the conservation status and the importance of forest remnants at Embu (SP, Brazil) for the maintenance of the local plant diversity. A previous classification of the vegetation cover was made with aerial photographs interpretation in order to guide the selection of the forest fragments to be evaluated. In a quick survey, the floristic composition (focused on tree species) and some structural and physiognomic descriptors were recorded to assess the conservation status of the vegetation. Nine remaining forests with areas between four and 35 ha were characterized, totaling 140 ha. Despite of the short time, 197 species were recorded, being 172 trees typical of the Ombrophilous Dense Forest and some species from the Seasonal Semideciduous Forest. Comparing the tree and shrub species between the remaining forests and the Morro Grande Reserve Forest -conservation unit located next to the study site -95 species were found in common and 65 species exclusively occurring at Embu forests. Moreover, seven threatened species according to the state, national and world red lists were recorded. Although these seven species were mostly found in the more mature fragments, some were also found in disturbed ones, indicating that even with the massive occurrence of secondary forests, the maintenance of the forest remnants of Embu may help to preserve some species still not protected in the region. The forest can also contribute to protect water and soil resources and to connect native forest patches, facilitating the gene flow of plant and animal species and, consequently, promoting the maintenance of the Atlantic Forest biodiversity.Keywords: Atlantic Rain forest, tree community, biodiversity. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o grau de conservação e a importância dos remanescentes florestais situados em Embu -SP para a manutenção da diversidade da flora local. Para tanto, realizou-se o mapeamento e a classificação prévia da cobertura vegetal da área, a fim de se selecionarem os fragmentos a serem avaliados. Para determinar o grau de conservação desses fragmentos, efetuou-se levantamento expedito, com ênfase na vegetação arbórea, no qual foram registrados a composição florística e alguns descritores fisionômicos e estruturais. Foram caracterizados nove fragmentos, cujas áreas variaram de aproximadamente quatro a 35 ha, totalizando 140 ha. Apesar de curto, o levantamento possibilitou o registro de 197 espécies, das quais 172 arbóreas e em sua maioria da Floresta Ombrófila Densa mas com algumas espécies da Floresta Estacional Semidecidual. Comparando a composição de espécies arbóreas encontradas nos fragmentos àquela presente na Reserva Florestal do Morro Grande -unidade de conservação localizada próxima à área de estudo -constatou-se a ocorrência de 95 espécies em comum às duas áreas e 65 espécies com ocorrência exclusiva nos fragmentos. -(Structure and aspects of natural regeneration of a Mixed Ombrophyllous Forest at Parque Estadual de Campos do Jordão, São Paulo State, Brazil). The objective of this study was to evaluate the floristics and structural differences between adult and regenerating components of a stretch of Mixed Ombrophyllous Forest at Parque Estadual de Campos do Jordão, within the scope of raising hypotheses on its successional trajectory. In order to sample the adult component (CBH ≥ 15 cm), 50 permanent plots of 10 × 20 m were allotted while five sub-plots of 1 × 1 m of the regenerating component (h ≥ 30 cm and CBH < 15 cm) were allotted in each plot. In the adult component, 1,770 individuals were sampled, distributed in 58 species, 38 genus and 26 families (H' = 3.08 and J = 0.73). In the regenerating component, 576 individuals, 55 species, 39 genus and 23 families (H' = 3.41 and J = 0.84) were sampled. We have concluded that procedures for conservation of the coniferous are needed. O estudo buscou avaliar diferenças florísticas e estruturais entre os componentes adulto e regenerante de trecho de Floresta Ombrófila Mista em Campos do Jordão, a fim de levantar hipóteses sobre sua trajetória sucessional. Para amostragem do componente adulto (CAP ≥ 15 cm) foram instaladas 50 parcelas permanentes de 10 × 20 m e, em cada uma dessas, cinco subparcelas de 1 × 1 m para amostragem do componente regenerante (h ≥ 30 cm e CAP < 15 cm). No componente adulto foram amostrados 1.770 indivíduos, distribuídos em 58 espécies, 38 gêneros e 26 famílias (H' = 3,08 e J = 0,73). Já entre os regenerantes foram observados 576 indivíduos, 55 espécies, 39 gêneros e 23 famílias (H' = 3,41 e J = 0,84). Constatou-se que são necessárias ações de manejo para a conservação in situ das coníferas locais.
We analyzed the structure of the understory community in the Atlantic Forest sensu lato, for which phytosociological descriptions of the understory are lacking. We delineated 50 plots of 10 × 20 m each at four sites within an Araucaria forest (a subtype of Atlantic Forest), located in the municipalities of Bananal, Campos do Jordão, Itaberá and Barra do Chapéu, all of which are in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. To sample the resident species of the understory, we randomly selected five 1 × 1 m subplots within each plot, resulting in a total sampling area of 250 m 2 at each site. We identified differences among the locations, mostly due to proportional differences in growth forms, in terms of species richness and the importance values within the community. Factors potentially influencing the understory structure include macroclimatic and microclimatic conditions, as well as forest fragmentation, the abundance of deciduous trees in the canopy, the surrounding vegetation and geographic location.
Th e aim of this work was to evaluate the fl oristic composition, richness, and diversity of the upper and lower strata of a stretch of mixed rain forest near the city of Itaberá, in southeastern Brazil. We also investigated the diff erences between this conservation area and other stretches of mixed rain forest in southern and southeastern Brazil, as well as other nearby forest formations, in terms of their fl oristic relationships. For our survey of the upper stratum (diameter at breast height [DBH] ≥ 15 cm), we established 50 permanent plots of 10 × 20 m. Within each of those plots, we designated fi ve, randomly located, 1 × 1 m subplots, in order to survey the lower stratum (total height ≥ 30 cm and DBH < 15 cm). In the upper stratum, we sampled 1429 trees and shrubs, belonging to 134 species, 93 genera, and 47 families. In the lower stratum, we sampled 758 trees and shrubs, belonging to 93 species, 66 genera, and 39 families. In our fl oristic and phytosociological surveys, we recorded 177 species, belonging to 106 genera and 52 families. Th e Shannon Diversity Index was 4.12 and 3.5 for the upper and lower strata, respectively. Cluster analysis indicated that nearby forest formations had the strongest fl oristic infl uence on the study area, which was therefore distinct from other mixed rain forests in southern Brazil and in the Serra da Mantiqueira mountain range.
