In teaching and learning process particularly at university level, High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) should be an integral element to foster students’s critical and creative thinking. It should not only be designed for assessment purposes but also be implemented within classroom teaching process. This study is aimed at analyzing students’ HOTS encompassing three cognitive domains as parameters to identify students’ HOTS namely; analysing, evaluating, and creating. This is a mixed method study which is descriptively presented. The data collection was conducted by employing three observations during teaching learning process and distributing questionnaires to 32 students of English department in semester 5. In addition, students were selected using snowball technique and were interviewed. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used to data analysis. The finding reveals that indicators and characteristics of HOTS are presented very consistently during classroom teaching. Students frequently show critical and creative thinking through variety of ways when participating in the classroom teaching process. The Interpretation Card works so effectively and contributes vividly to the HOTS of the students.
This study is to evaluate the implementation of Task Activities based on CALL which consist of observing, questioning, exploring, and communicating. The developed materials are nine chapters that had been implemented in two different classes of SMPN 1 Gresik and SMPM 4 Gresik in Indonesia. Of quesionnaires and interviews, the results indicate that the materials that have been developed already meet the standards for preparing and getting excellent response from users, especially teachers and students in several aspects, namely; competencies and objectives, content material, relevant activities, media which was authentic and interesting, and the fulfillment of the diversity of types of exercises that are available in each chapter. So that these materials can conclusively give the student easier understanding, interesting, and fun learning, because these materials have been equipped with the exercises both in class and individually. This study implies that combination of task based activities and CALL really generates better opportunities to create English Teaching more innovative.
The essential ecosystem of mangroves Ujungpangkah (KEE MUP) is a protection and limited utilization area located on the coastal area in the north of Gresik Regency. This area has high biodiversity, especially various mangroves and waterbird species from different parts of the world due to their migration process. To protect this area, it is required to enhance the sensitivity of students as the young generation to react appropriately to keep the environment sustainable. In this case, education-based environmental studies (Ecological Education) is used as a sustainable approach to answering this challenge. Various activities of community services are structured through a strategic plan for ecological education implementation. With this Ecological Education, students can increase their sense of love for the environment to keep the KEE MUP conservation zone inherited sustainably
The use of educational technology has given rise to the flipped classroom in providing learners with opportunities for active learning and engaging with material inside and outside class. Many previous studies have reported students’ satisfaction in using the flipped classroom for medical, math, and English courses; however, research on using flipped classroom to enhance learners’ intercultural communicative competence (ICC) in the EFL classroom remains insufficient. Therefore, this paper studies a one-semester project in which learners developed their ICC skills through content-based instruction (CBI) in a flipped classroom setting. Twenty-six students in the English department of a private university in Indonesia participated in this study. Using qualitative data analysis, the results show that CBI and flipped classroom improved the participants’ ICC significantly. These results could be valuable for those who wish to conduct similar research.
