We present two empirical studies on the design of control software for robot swarms. In Study A, Vanilla and EvoStick, two previously published automatic design methods, are compared with human designers. The comparison is performed on five swarm robotics tasks that are different from those on which Vanilla and EvoStick have been previously tested. The results show that, under the experimental conditions considered, Vanilla performs better than EvoStick, but it is not able to outperform human designers. The results indicate that Vanilla's weak element is the optimization algorithm employed The main contributors to this research are G. Francesca and M. Birattari. AutoMoDe and Vanilla were conceived and developed by G. Francesca, M. Brambilla, A. Brutschy, V. Trianni, and M. Birattari.123 Swarm Intell to search the space of candidate designs. To improve over Vanilla and with the final goal of obtaining an automatic design method that performs better than human designers, we introduce Chocolate, which differs from Vanilla only in the fact that it adopts a more powerful optimization algorithm. In Study B, we perform an assessment of Chocolate. The results show that, under the experimental conditions considered, Chocolate outperforms both Vanilla and the human designers. Chocolate is the first automatic design method for robot swarms that, at least under specific experimental conditions, is shown to outperform a human designer.
In this paper, we study how to obtain a quantitative correspondence between the dynamics of the microscopic implementation of a robot swarm and the dynamics of a macroscopic model of nest-site selection in honeybees. We do so by considering a collective decision-making case study: the shortest path discovery/selection problem. In this case study, obtaining a quantitative correspondence between the microscopic and macroscopic dynamics-the so-called micro-macro link problem-is particularly challenging because the macroscopic model does not take into account the spatial factors inherent to the path discovery/selection problem. We frame this study in the context of a general engineering methodology that prescribes the inclusion of available theoretical knowledge about target macroscopic models into design patterns for the microscopic implementation. The attainment of the micro-macro link presented in this paper represents a necessary step towards the formalisation of a design pattern for collective decision making in distributed systems.
Abstract. We present an experiment in automatic design of robot swarms. For the first time in the swarm robotics literature, we perform an objective comparison of multiple design methods: we compare swarms designed by two automatic methods-AutoMoDe-Vanilla and EvoStickwith swarms manually designed by human experts. AutoMoDe-Vanilla and EvoStick have been previously published and tested on two tasks. To evaluate their generality, in this paper we test them without any modification on five new tasks. Besides confirming that AutoMoDe-Vanilla is e↵ective, our results provide new insight into the design of robot swarms. In particular, our results indicate that, at least under the adopted experimental protocol, not only does automatic design su↵er from the reality gap, but also manual design. The results also show that both manual and automatic methods benefit from bias injection. In this work, bias injection consists in restricting the design search space to the combinations of pre-existing modules. The results indicate that bias injection helps to overcome the reality gap, yielding better performing robot swarms.
While direct local communication is very important for the organization of robot swarms, so far it has mostly been used for relatively simple tasks such as signaling robots preferences or states. Inspired by the emergence of meaning found in natural languages, more complex communication skills could allow robot swarms to tackle novel situations in ways that may not be a priori obvious to the experimenter. This would pave the way for the design of robot swarms with higher autonomy and adaptivity. The state of the art regarding the emergence of communication for robot swarms has mostly focused on offline evolutionary approaches, which showed that signaling and communication can emerge spontaneously even when not explicitly promoted. However, these approaches do not lead to complex, language-like communication skills, and signals are tightly linked to environmental and/or sensory-motor states that are specific to the task for which communication was evolved. To move beyond current practice, we advocate an approach to emergent communication in robot swarms based on language games. Thanks to language games, previous studies showed that cultural self-organization-rather than biological evolution-can be responsible for the complexity and expressive power of language. We suggest that swarm robotics can be an ideal test-bed to advance research on the emergence of language-like communication. The latter can be key to provide robot swarms with additional skills to support self-organization and adaptivity, enabling the design of more complex collective behaviors.
Multi-robot exploration and navigation is a challenging task, especially within the swarm robotics domain, in which the individual robots have limited capabilities and have access to local information only. An interesting approach to exploration and navigation in swarm robotics is social odometry, that is, a cooperative strategy in which robots exploit odometry for individual navigation, and share their own position estimation through peer-to-peer local communication to collectively reduce the estimation error. In this paper, the robots have to localize both a home and a goal location and navigate back and forth between them. The way in which navigational information is aggregated influences both the efficiency in navigation between the two areas, and the self-organized selection of better paths. We propose three new parameterfree mechanisms for information aggregation and we provide an extensive study to ascertain their properties in terms of navigation efficiency and collective decision. An interesting aspect of social odometry is that it naturally leads to the emergence of collective decisions within the swarm (Gutiérrez et al., 2010).
