The quest for contextual identity and value-based developments by concerned authorities justifies the necessity to explore the inherent motivating factors that influence housing formation and the built environments of the varied Nigerian ethnic groups. Rapoport's identification of socio-cultural values as the primary influencers of house form has come under scrutiny, stipulating a replication in different contexts. One tends to ask about the motivating factors for the indigenous house form of the different ethnic groups in Nigeria that need to be explored and harnessed for value-based planning, design, and development for future infrastructure. This study explores the motivating factors of the indigenous house form of the Tiv people of central Nigeria, filtered through Maslow's Hierarchy of needs. This qualitative study utilised the Means-End Chain soft laddering technique, where 24 participants were interviewed, analysed, and ranked. According to the findings, Tiv indigenous dwellings are circular-shaped, connecting them to their cultural heritage. The open compounds also permit communal interactions in their natural setting and express their determination to live independent family lives. For housing stakeholders in Nigeria, the primitive values evoked in this study are essential for developing a contemporary, culturally sustainable society.
The desire for sustainable architectural flood resilience for housing that will lower the number of defects caused by floods prompted an investigation into the stakeholders in the domain. In recent years, the threat of flooding has pulled the attention of both researchers and practitioners. The purpose of the study is: to determine the most important authors, collaboration connections, and countries in academic works in this field, to identify the present mainstream research, and to suggest future research directions. The research's scope reveals a tendency that goes from small to huge, or from the level of individuals and friends to businesses and organisations, then to the level of countries. A systematic literature review (SLR) was done. From Scopus, 155 related bibliographic records were retrieved. Through exclusion and inclusion criteria, bibliometric analysis has been performed, and scientometric analysis has also been applied to strengthen the SLR findings using science mapping visualisation tools. The study provides an easily accessible point of reference for practitioners, policymakers, and research and development (R&D) bodies in the realm of practices. The most important authors, collaboration connections, and countries around the world are known as a result of the study. The study increases public awareness of the present trend in the domain and creates room for future research in less explored areas. The data reported in this review are primarily drawn from developed countries because there is a dearth of research on the field in Africa and other developing countries.
The study aimed to establish the relationship between values and people’s preferences for sustainable improvement in Nigeria’s indigenous housing context. The relationship was tested in SEM using ordinal survey data obtained between February and March 2022 with 241 valid samples. The mainstream values were statistically validated using CFA while the relationships were generated in the SEM. Results established a significant relationship between values and the people’s preferences for transformative improvements. The findings provide a foundation for long-term policy formation, practical transformative experimentation, and an empirical foundation for future methodological research.
Most people inhabiting or owning houses in flood-prone areas do not have a prior idea of the situation of the site. The type of flood determines the causes and effects of flooding. It is, therefore, necessary to understand the causes and consequences of flooding in our sites. Both the developer and homeowners after having an in-depth idea of the situation and especially the impact of a particular flood will from the onset decide on whether to go on with the intended idea of development or seek an alternative area. The decision of choices would be taken based on the flood's known effects, causes and professional evaluation. The purpose of this study was to look into the five types of floods alongside their features, and decisions to be taken after evaluation. The scope of the study was to assess the condition of sites regarding floods and a subsequent decision arrived before starting any construction. Data was gathered using the review approach: Books and articles. The knowledge acquired would be relevant in the decision of the end-users or developer to either start construction or abandon the site. In situations where the choice is to start development, further education would be needed on resilience to the specific flood type found in the location. The impact of the study reveals that an estimated cost, time, emotional worries, and resilience techniques would be disclosed before the start of any construction for early decision. However, if the disadvantage of starting the project outweighs the advantages, the best decision is to avoid the site and not start the work
Window and view significantly influence the visual comfort in the workspace. It is important to ensure an effective working environment as the employees normally spend one third of their daily life in the working space. Lacking of windows with appropriate view in the Malaysia offices, especially the intermediate shop offices lead to the problem of windowless working environment. It is essential to have natural view through window for contributing the visual comfort. Objective of this study is to identify the important of visual comfort and the preferences of employees on surrogate window and view in windowless office. The inexistence of real view through window may require surrogate view as replacement. This study proposed surrogate window and view as an immediate solution to improve the problem. A survey has been done in five selected case studies by using the online questionnaire that is more convenient and effective. The result reveals that the most preferred surrogate window and view is the window with sea view (mean=2.938, S.D=0.244); the least preferred voted by employees is surrogate window with riverine view (mean=0.088, S.D. = 0.284). In conclusion, this study proved that the preferred surrogate window and view among employees is the view to sea, gender and age do not affect the result in this study. Sea view should be applied in a windowless office as a surrogate window and view to improve the visual comfort in the working environment.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
