Saltzman's (1984) comments regarding our research examining variables related to premature termination in a university counseling service (Rodolfa, Rapaport, & Lee, 1983) are responded to in this comment. Specifically discussed are Saltzman's concerns regarding the meaningfulness of our results, citation of previous research, our definition of premature termination, and the operational definitions and procedures used. Issues involved in undertaking research using an existing data base and the influence of organizational/administrative factors on counseling process are also considered.
A view of self-injurious behavior (SIB) informed by trauma theory and therapeutic community principles provides a framework to guide clinical practice, promote a safe living and learning environment, and inform policy development to support a collaborative university response to SIB. A dual emphasis of concern for the safety of the individual who self-injures and the impact of the behavior on the living and learning environment of others is illustrated in a case example.
