This article discussed the study of Chinese calligraphy texts/characters at the Tjong A Fie Mansion museum as covered in philological scholarship. The notion of philology in this paper is not limited to the root words but is broader along with the development of this science from time to time, in studying the cultural treasures of the past from the object of study which is called a manuscript. The research method was paradigmatic in order to create a form of research report that has been done. Presented starting from the descriptive, analytical and comparative stages. Utilizing the theory of philological explanation from Henri Chambert-Loir. The results of this study were the reconstruction of text/characters as the content of the manuscript which was abstract and essential, to be precise the calligraphy characters found at the main entrance, front door and back of the left-wing of the Tjong A Fie Mansion museum building.
Judul penelitian ini adalah‘Masjid Lama Gang Bengkok Sebagai Simbol Multietnis di Kota Medan’. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk meganalisis bentuk ornamen dan simbolis pada bangunan Masjid Lama Gang Bengkok, serta menjelaskan sejarah Masjid Lama Gang Bengkok yang dijadikan sebagai simbol multietnis di Kota Medan. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian kualitatif dan diuraikan secara deskripstif. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah teori semiotik dari Charles Sanders Peirce. Data diperoleh melalui teknik observasi dan wawancara dengan beberapa informan dan orang sekitar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bangunan ini menjadi salah satu simbol multietnis atas kerukunan antar umat beragama dan berbudaya dari zaman dahulu hingga saat ini, dan dapat dilihat dari bentuk dan simbolis pada bangunan Masjid Lama Gang Bengkok, Seperti bentuk dan simbol kebudayaan Melayu, China, dan Persia. The title of this research is ‘Lama Gang Bengkok Mosque As A Multiethnic Symbol In The City Of Medan’. The purpose of this study was to analyze the ornamental and symbolic forms of the Lama Gang Bengkok Mosque building, and explain the history of the Lama Gang Bengkok Mosque which was used as a multiethnic symbol in Medan City. The method used is a qualitative research method and described descriptively. The theory used in this study is the semiotic theory of Charles Sanders Peirce. Data was obtained through observation and interview techniques with several informants and people around. The results showed that this building became one of the multiethnic symbols of harmony between religious and cultured people from ancient times to the present, and can be seen from the form and symbolism of the Lama Gang Bengkok Mosque building, such as the forms and symbols of Malay, Chinese and Persian culture.
ABSTRAK. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui makna puak poi dalam upacara paisin dalam budaya masyarakat Tionghoa di Kota Medan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif yang ditulis secara deskriptif. Metode pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui studi lapangan berupa: wawancara, observasi, perekaman upacara penggunaan puak poi, pengamatan terlibat (participant observer), dan studi kepustakaan. Secara kontekstual puak poi merupakan sarana komunikasi kepada Tuhan, dewa, atau leluhur di alam baka. Secara semiotik puak poi memiliki tiga petanda jawaban, yaitu: sengpoi (jawaban “ya”),jipoi (jawaban yang menggantung “antara ya dan tidak”), dan kampoi (jawaban “tidak”). Teks pertanyaan sekaligus permintaan umumnya menggunakan bahasa Indonesia, dengan tema berupa rezeki, jodoh, pengobatan, karir kerja, dan pembersihan altar keluarga.Kata kunci: Tionghoa, Medan, puak poi, paisin, sengpoi, jipoi, kampoi
That the Chinese began to immigrate to Indonesia, especially in Medan city was in the early 12nd century. In the meantime they also introduced their religion, art and culture to the local people. ‘The acculturation refl ected on Tjong A Fie’s Residence’ is selected as the title of the thesis with the purpose of assessing and understanding the acculturation that was discovered on the buildings with Chinese style in Medan City. This research was focused on the objects of Tjong A Fie’s residence.This research used John W. Berry’s acculturation theory; while the method that is used is the qualitative descriptive method.An acculturation is a prosess that happens when one group of people with some kind of culture confronts the elements of some other culture. From this comes into being the change of the original cultures, yet these two cultures have not lost the elements of their own cultures. The acculturation can be seen on part of Tjong A Fie’s residence like the gold color that was used dominatedly, the pictures on the cloth and the melaysian special window shapes. The elements of European culture can be seen on the strut, the decorative lamp, the table and the sculptures of the ceiling of Tjong A Fie’s residence. The elements of Chinese culture can be found on the strut of the front gate, the sculptures of lion, the sculptures on the wall, the entrance door as well as the shape of the curving roof that stands for the special structures of house in China.Keywords: acculturation, Chinese house, Tjong A Fie
‘Unsur-unsur budaya Melayu di rumah Tjong A Fie di Medan 'dipilih sebagai judul artikel dengan tujuan menilai dan memahami akulturasi yang ditemukan pada bangunan dengan gaya Cina di Kota Medan. Penelitian ini difokuskan pada objek-objek rumah Tjong A Fie. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori akulturasi John W. Berry; sedangkan metode yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Akulturasi adalah proses yang terjadi ketika satu kelompok orang dengan beberapa jenis budaya menghadapi unsur-unsur dari budaya lain. Dari sinilah muncul perubahan budaya asal, namun kedua budaya ini tidak kehilangan unsur-unsur budaya mereka sendiri. Akulturasi dapat dilihat pada bagian rumah Tjong A Fie seperti warna emas yang digunakan secara dominan, gambar-gambar pada kain dan bentuk jendela khusus Melayu.
