A microorganism with close immunohistological and genetic resemblance to Helicobacter pylori was found in the resected gallbladder mucosa of a 41-year-old woman. The woman was admitted to hospital complaining of fever and right hypochondrial pain. Cholecystectomy was carried out under the diagnosis of gallstones and cholecystitis. A microorganism resembling H. pylori (stained with H&E, Giemsa, and Wartin-Starry) was detected incidentally on pathological examination. The microorganism was also positive for immunohistochemical staining. An amplification reaction was seen on genetic examination by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method (urease beta-genes). Our findings suggest that H. pylori may be present in tissues other than gastric mucosa.
The Maf family of transcription factors is characterized by a typical bZip structure; these transcription factors act as important regulators of the development and differentiation of many organs and tissues, including the kidney. The Maf family consists of two subgroups that are characterized according to their structure: large Maf transcription factors and small Maf transcription factors. The large Maf subgroup consists of four proteins, designated as MAFA, MAFB, c-MAF and neural retina-specific leucine zipper. In particular, MAFA is a distinct molecule that has been attracting the attention of researchers because it acts as a strong transactivator of insulin, suggesting that Maf transcription factors are likely to be involved in systemic energy homeostasis. In this review, we focused on the regulation of glucose/energy balance by Maf transcription factors in various organs.
Herbal preparations are widely available and often regarded by the public as harmless remedies for a variety of medical ailments. However, some of these products or their metabolites can cause adverse effects such as liver damage. In this case report a 53-year-old female taking Shou-Wu-Pian for 8 months presented with acute hepatitis. Histopathological assessment of liver tissue obtained by biopsy was consistent with a toxic reaction. Clinical and biochemical resolution was brought about following cessation of the drug. It is important for clinicians to consider Chinese herbal preparations as a potential cause of abnormal liver function test results.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
