Introduction: Mean platelet volume (MPV) acts as an acute phase reactant- negative or positive. The aim of this study was to estimate the MPV levels in Indian children with acute gastroenteritis (AGE) and to correlate the MPV levels with C-reactive protein (CRP) and total leucocyte count (TLC). Methods: A retrospective observational study was carried out on 136 children (1 month to 16 years old) who had been hospitalized for acute gastroenteritis in paediatric department of B.C.M. Hospital, Sitapur (UP), India from April 2023 to June 2023. Mean platelet volume, C-reactive protein, and total leukocyte count of patients were recorded. Correlations between blood indices were calculated through the Pearson's correlation coefcient (r). Results: MPV levels ranged from 5.8 to 11.4 , with the average level being 8.4 , the standard deviation being 1.3. Mean platelet volume was positively correlated with C-reactive protein. Although, there was a weak correlation (r= 0.22). Mean platelet volume had a weak negative correlation with total leucocyte count (r= -0.23). Conclusion: In this study, we found MPV levels 8.4 ± 1.3 in Indian children with acute gastroenteritis. Mean platelet volume had a weak positive correlation with C-reactive protein and weak negative correlation with total leucocyte count
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
