This paper presents a short state of the art overview of personalized content access and retrieval, which is extended into a description offuture trends in this domain. Some attention is devoted to upcoming standards far user modelling (MPEG-7 user profile), standards enabling universal access to content (MPEG-21) and a brief look at the mechanisms for semantic descriptions of content. These ideas and technologies should simplifi and enhance future development of personalized multimedia systems.
