This paper reviews government and nonprofit (GNP) healthcare accounting literature for the period 1990-2020. We collect a global sample of 413 papers published during the period. We categorize each paper according to the BYU taxonomy of accounting research and document publication trends over the sample period. We highlight the contributions of underutilized methodologies (e.g., field studies) and the potential impact of understudied topics (e.g., the Affordable Care Act). This paper should be of interest to prospective and current PhD students and a diverse set of GNP researchers specializing in a variety of methodologies.
