We revisit the calculation of vacuum energy density in compact spacetimes. By explicitly computing the effective action through the heat kernel method, we compute vacuum energy density for the general case of k compact spatial dimensions in p+k dimensional Minkowski spacetime. Additionally, we use this formalism to calculate the Casimir force on a piston placed in such spacetimes, and note the deviations from previously reported results in the literature.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
