Background: India, a developing country, faces many challenges in rendering health needs to its countrymen. The influence of culture is seen in every discipline of health and medical practices, and dentistry is no exception. This study was performed to investigate the existence of myths and taboos in dentistry, to assess the variation of these myths across various demographic aspects and socio-economic status, to co-relate the existence of myths with the oral health of the subject and to impart education to the people regarding abolishing the myth as that will be a hindrance towards a healthy life in patients. Methods: The study had a cross-sectional design, used a structured questionnaire and was conducted to assess the existence of dental myths and taboos and to determine its correlation with the OHIS index of the patients. Statistical analysis software SPSS V 16.0 was used. Descriptive & inferential statistical analysis was performed on categorical and continuous data. Chi-square, independent sample T tests and ANOVA test were used to compare the distribution of caries and OHI-S between different groups. P value less than 0.05 (p<0.05) was considered to be significant. Socioeconomic status was also calculated. Results: In the present study it was found that the there was almost an equal distribution of prevalence of myths in the educated as well as uneducated patients .Also the ratio of existence of myths was found higher in females as compared to males. Conclusions: Existence of myths and taboos regarding dental health has started decreasing among the urban population due to the widespread of awareness regarding dentistry. But still there is prevalence of some myths in the patients having primary education as compared to patients having secondary and tertiary education. If community is educated about proper prevention and cure, the myths relating dental concepts will vanish from the society and over all dental health status of the community will improve.
Introduction: Root canal treatment (RCT) is a multi-phase procedure and is the one of the most regularly practicing procedures in dentistry. This is the procedure in which many of the undergraduate dental interns face problems in one and the other step. Therefore. A questionnaire based study was done over 100 interns to determine significant procedural difficulties and challenges encountered by undergraduates during endodontic root canal treatment. Material and Methodology: It was a cross sectional study in which 100 interns with the same year of graduation and level of experience who were willing to participate were involved. All participants were given questionnaires involving 18 questions in which there were 15 close ended questions and three open ended questions. The statistical analysis was done to get the results. Results: For the first 15 close-ended questions, interns found it difficult to manage calcification in pulp chamber and root canals (89.9%), placing rubber dam (80.8%), and removing gutta percha in retreatment cases (75.8%). Interns didn't find any difficulty in irrigation procedure (92.9%), radiographic verification of master cones (92.9%), and giving local anaesthesia (89.9%). Conclusion: Assessment of major difficulties faced by interns during root canal treatment may assist in development of better and effective methods of teaching. This study will help to discover various gaps in teaching schedules which if altered correctly would be of great benefit to the quality of their performance.
The desire for beauty has existed since time immemorial and the practice of body art is increasing day by day in fashion industry. Body art includes body piercings, tattooing, and oral jewellery like soft tissue piercings and jewels attached to teeth. Placement of tooth jewellery for creating a beautiful smile requires utilization of superior skills, advanced technology, and vast knowledge along with careful consideration to the patient's facial form, function and esthetics.
Supernumerary tooth, also known as hyperdontia, is the condition where more than the normal number of teeth is present. By definition, the supernumerary teeth are the extra teeth present in the oral cavity. They can be found in the region of oral cavity, but are common in the maxilla than mandible.Supernumerary teeth may be encountered by the dental practitioner as a chance finding on a radiograph or as the cause of an impacted central incisor. Their presence may give rise to a variety of clinical problems. Detection of supernumerary is best achieved through clinical and radiographic examination. This article shows the cases of supernumerary teeth in mandibular premolar region and maxillary third molar region along with its etiology, frequency, classification, complication, and management.
The loss of anterior tooth can be hurtful to the patient both psychologically and socially. In adolescent patients, temporary replacement of teeth can minimize these concerns. Many approaches have been described for this temporary replacement. Adhesively luted, fiber-reinforced retained fixed partial denture (FPD) can be a clinical alternative for the replacement of missing anterior tooth in selective situations. This is an innovative alternative to conventional metal, ceramic restoration. It is especially useful for patients who cannot afford high cost of FPD and cannot devote much time (number of sittings) for the treatment. The main advantage of fiber-reinforced composite fixed prosthesis is conservative cutting of tooth. Structure and chairside fabrication of the bridge using acrylic tooth are less expensive for the patients. The purpose of this clinical study is to evaluate the clinical usefulness of the fiber-reinforced composite FPD. This report describes the clinical treatment of patients using fiber-reinforced composite. How to cite this article Raina SA, Khode P, Warhadpande MM.
