Digitalization enhances the impact of museum collections, and it is a global trend for sustainable development. Documentation of museum collections is an essential part of museum development because there is no meaningful museum setting without proper documentation. It is through documentation that museum collections would be understood and appreciated by the audience. Initially, documentation of museum collections can be done through manual procedures. Today, with the advent of digital technology, museums are taking another dimension, paradigm shift from analogue to digital. Different cultural organizations have called upon digital documentation of museum collections to sustain the vital information, accessibility and preservation of collections. People can easily access museums online, secure objects, and go in line with sustainable development. The most crucial part of digital documentation is to manage, administer, record keeping and maintenance. Digital museums are drivers of research, education, creativity, employment, entertainment, economic growth and development. Many museums institutions in Africa and other parts of the world are not digitalized. The paper's objectives are to explore digital documentation, its significance, and what digital tools can be used to digitalize museums. The article adopted content analysis, using a secondary source of data. The sources include textbooks, articles in journals, newspapers, pamphlets etc. All these volumes form the data. The paper finds that digital documentation is important in every human endeavour to ascertain sustainable development, easy connectivity with other social development sectors, and protection against illicit trafficking and other crime against museum objects. The paper recommends that museums in Africa should key into digitalization and employ experts to facilitate museum activities professionally.
Terrorism is one of the devastating activities around the world today that brought about a setback to sustainable development, especially in the areas of heritage sites and monuments across the globe. Nigeria is a clear example where Boko Haram insurgency inflected havoc against the heritage site of the people. Heritage sites played a significant role in human endeavors, such as job opportunities, social tourism, entertainment, sustainable environment, revenue generation, education, research, and many more. Terrorism has impacted negatively on the heritage sites that caused considerable damage to the socio-cultural and economic livelihood of the communities. In early 2014 precisely, the terrorist attacked indigenous communities and the heritage sites of Nigeria. World heritage sites and other heritages are excessively affected. This heritage site attracted tourists, researchers, excursionists, and other related partners. Boko Haram insurgents destroyed the livelihood of the people, and many people were forcefully displaced. The objectives of the paper are to examine the brief history of the sites and identify the impacts of the Boko Haram insurgency on heritage sites. This paper employed content and field research in collecting data. The information collected is presented and analyzed accordingly. The study revealed that the attack caused severe destruction on the heritage sites; many people were killed and displaced, valuable cultural properties were looted, and economic hardship was witnessed. The paper intends to draw the attention of stakeholders toward this vital matter and recommends that cultural policy be revisited in the context of safeguarding heritage sites and prevention of looting of cultural properties during times of crisis.
The museum is one institution that accommodates every aspect of human activities and reminds people of their past to present. Most museum collections have been sustained by preserving and documenting natural and cultural heritage. Museum itself serve as an institution of learning, research has been conducted, and entertain different people with diverse cultural background without discrimination. Today, in Northern Nigeria, most people perceived museums as a place of fetish collections are stored rather than a multifunctional institution that deals with many sectors of life. Museums have the capacity to reflect both continuity and change, to preserve and protect cultural and natural heritage while illustrating the expression of the human imagination and the natural world through the exhibition. Museum in the 21st century has completely transformed due to the advancement of science and technology. But, Northern Nigeria is left behind in such technological development. The paper utilized the qualitative method to enable the researcher to explore the challenges and prospects of museum institutions in Northern Nigeria. This paper used primary and secondary methods of data collection. The paper's objective is to explore the significance and identify the role of science and technology in museums and the challenges and prospects. The paper finds that museums are an integral part of the human experience that transformed as time went on. Many museums have centralized collections and exhibition across the globe. But, museums in Northern Nigeria faces a considerable challenge, and the prospect of the institutions is at stake. The paper recommends that museums should explore other avenues to capture audience desire in line with global base practice.
Purpose: The purpose of the study is to identify the tourist attractions available in Northern Nigeria, and unveil the relationship between tourism and peace, as well as tourism and national development in the region. It attempts to understand the perception of respondents on whether tourism has any significance in building peace and contributing to national development in Northern Nigeria. Method: The study adopts a mix method of quantitative and qualitative. Data was generated through structured questionnaire and complemented with a desk review of literature. Convenience Sampling was utilised in collecting data from 522 respondents in Kaduna (56), Kano (62), Kebbi (42), Katsina (45), Sokoto (54), Borno (63), Yobe (58), Bauchi (47), Adamawa (41), and Taraba (54) States of Northern Nigeria. Result: The study revealed that northern Nigeria has numerous tourist attractions that have not been appreciated and highly under-utilised. The findings contradict the existing literature that tourism contributes to peace largely because of the poor awareness that respondents have on the tourist attractions in their region as well as their inability to utilise those sites for meaningful purposes. However, other findings of the study are in compliance with existing studies which posits that tourist attractions contributes to national development especially on the economic aspects. The study acknowledges the relevance of tourism to research purposes, as well as an avenue for promoting socio-cultural values. Contribution: The paper contributes to the existing research based literature and debates on tourism and its relationship with peacebuilding and national development. It presents a location specific opinion of respondents on tourist attractions which will be used for empirical reference purposes. It will therefore benefit writers in the field of tourism to understand the current perception of individuals thereby exploring further into specifics of how investments in tourism can enhance peaceful co-existence and national development. Governments will find the piece useful as it will help in formulating policies and establishing institutions capable of reviving the tourism and socio-cultural economy at large.
