The positive electrostatic potential (red) on the surface of the macrocycle inhibits the protonation of the methanide carbon atom, whereas the negatively charged tunnel (blue) through the macrocycle facilitates an approach of the proton to the phosphorus atom. This favors the formation of the thermodynamically less stable PH-phosphonium ylide instead of the phosphane. For more information see the following pages.
