We demonstrate that electrochemically etched, hydrogen capped Si n H x clusters with n larger than 20 are obtained within a family of discrete sizes. These sizes are 1.0 (Si 29 ), 1.67 (Si 123 ), 2.15, 2.9, and 3.7 nm in diameter. We characterize the particles via direct electron imaging, excitation and emission optical spectroscopy, and colloidal crystallization. The band gaps and emission bands are measured. The smallest four are ultrabright blue, green, yellow and red luminescent particles. The availability of discrete sizes and distinct emission in the red, green and blue ͑RGB͒ range is useful for biomedical tagging, RGB displays, and flash memories.
When a bubble of air rises to the top of a highly viscous liquid, it forms a dome-shaped protuberance on the free surface. Unlike a soap bubble, it bursts so slowly as to collapse under its own weight simultaneously, and folds into a wavy structure. This rippling effect occurs for both elastic and viscous sheets, and a theory for its onset is formulated. The growth of the corrugation is governed by the competition between gravitational and bending (shearing) forces and is exhibited for a range of densities, stiffnesses (viscosities), and sizes-a result that arises less from dynamics than from geometry, suggesting a wide validity. A quantitative expression for the number of ripples is presented, together with experimental results that support the theoretical predictions.
Partially polymerized membranes display a striking mechanical transition at low temperature known as the wrinkling transition. Fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy as well as profile measurements using an atomic force microscope revealed the existence of three degrees of wrinkling depending on the degree of the membrane polymerization. At low polymerization the membrane undergoes a cascade of wrinkling to form a folded phase with a characteristic exponent eta equal to 3, at intermediate polymerization, the membrane is in an intermediate-wrinkled phase (similar to the crumpling of an elastic sheet) with eta approximately 2.5, while at high polymerization the membrane undergoes an abrupt "compaction" to the wrinkled-rough phase with eta approximately 2.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
