Objectives: Low bone mass is a common disorder in elderly population which predisposes to fracture with minimal trauma. This study was performed to find out the association between the Body Mass Index (BMI) and Bone Mineral Density (BMD) in postmenopausal women.
Materials and Methods
Conclusion:The findings of this study portrait that aging and low BMI are risk factors associated with bone loss. So preventive measure should be taken for high risk post menopausal women.
Ectopic thyroid gland is uncommon in our routine clinical practice and among them dual ectopic thyroid appears to be rarer. We report an unusual case of two different locations of ectopic thyroid tissues in the lingual and left submandibular regions of a 12 years old girl who presented with painless, nodular left upper neck swelling. Provisionally, the patient was diagnosed by high resolution ultrasound (HRUS) of neck and confirmed by radionuclide thyroid scan. Thyroid scintigraphy with 99mTc-pertechnetate is highly sensitive but minimally invasive procedure to detect and image the ectopic thyroid tissue with fairly good specificity and negligible radiation exposure.

Objective: To evaluate the validity of sonoelastography of cold thyroid nodule in diagnosis of malignant nodule with fine needle aspiration cytology analysis as the reference standard.

Patients and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted in the Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences (INMAS), Sir Salimullah Medical College (SMC) & Mitford Hospital campus, Dhaka, from July 2015 to June 2016 in 85 patients with solitary solid cold nodule. Eighty five nodules in these patients were examined by conventional ultrasound, ultrasound elastography and radionuclidescan. The final diagnosis was obtained from cytological findings. Tissue stiffness on ultrasound elastography was scored from 1 (low stiffness over the entire nodule) to 4 (high stiffness over the entire nodule).

Results: The mean age was found 33.8±10.1 years with range from 12 to 58 years and male to female ratio was 1:5.1. The mean size of nodules was found 2.0±0.6 cm. Most (40.0%) of the patients were found in elastography score 2, 22(25.9%) score 1, 17(20.0%) score 4 and 12(14.1%) score 3. The validity of elastography scores had sensitivity 77.8%, specificity 86.2%, accuracy 83.5%, positive predictive values 72.4% and negative predictive values 89.3% for prediction of thyroid nodule.

Conclusion: Considering the validity parameter the elastography may be effective diagnostic modality for evaluation of thyroid nodule.

Bangladesh J. Objectives: In primary hyperthyroidism Tc-99m Sestamibi (MIBI) scanning is commonly used for localization of abnormal parathyroid gland and the reported sensitivity is very high. However, false negative scan remain a problem. We examined whether serum calcium and parathormone (PTH) level have any impact in the sensitivity of MIBI scan.Study design: A retrospective review of 55 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism who underwent MIBI scan from January 2012 to December 2014 were included in this study. All patients underwent parathyroid surgery followed by histopathological confirmation.
Results
Conclusion:Lower calcium and PTH level significantly correlate with reduced sensitivity of MIBI scan. Although we did not find the best cut-off level of serum calcium and PTH level that can predict a positive scan.
Bone scan is most frequently prescribed for evaluation of patients with known malignancy or screening of bony uptake for unexplained body ache. Extraosseous uptake in bone scan is point of interest because sometimes additional information could be found beside skeletal abnormality. Here we discuss an interesting case of extraosseous uptake.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
