It is now a common phenomenon in building services that some builders/clients call for the services of the electrical contractor/technicians to carry out an electrical installation without the provision or availability of standard electrical services drawings, at times due to the negligence of the builder/client about the importance of electrical services drawings or in other to reduce cost, which is detrimental and hazardous to the building, pieces of equipment installed or the occupants in the future. This paper analyses the relevance of electrical services engineers in construction and building services. A well-structured online survey was adopted and shared with different engineering platforms where building and construction professionals are to know the practice at various building and construction sites, and a total of 230 responses were collected, the data collected were examined using the descriptive statistics method with good pictorial representation. The result of the survey shows that 20% of the respondents complained about the absence of electrical services drawings, 38% complained that the electrical services drawings provided are not practicable, and 42% of the respondents talked about the availability of relevant electrical services drawings. The analysis from this study confirms that several electrical installations were carried out without the provision of practicable electrical services drawings, especially in domestic installations. It is recommended that the services of qualified electrical services engineers should be employed for standard electrical services drawings, which will give detailed information about the method of wiring, the suitable size/type of distribution, and the protection scheme for lighting and power installations in conformity with the appropriate standard and regulations for effective and well-balanced electrical services.
The need for clean and stable electricity has given rise to renewable energy globally. Currently, Wind Energy generation is one the leading renewable energy sources and DFIG-based wind turbine are invariably the best approach to generate a multi-megawatts power at variable speed with less fluctuation in output power, ability to control its generated active and reactive power with minimal cost. This paper presents a model of a grid connected DFIG based Wind Turbine system for variable- speed where the speed range requirements are small, the overall system simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK and the results shows the behaviour of DFIG with this type of control system and the numerous advantages in terms of cost reduction and the potential to build economically at multi-megawatt power system, as a result, DFIG grid connected wind turbine is essential.
The rapid growth in semiconductor devices and the need for energy conservation has given rise to the adoption of embedded systems and automation for easy operation of electrical appliances, this prompts many consumers to embrace the technology to ease the usage of electrical appliances and to curb energy wastage. This study deals with the development and testing of the Arduino microcontroller timer socket outlet for electrical appliances. The system was developed for the users to predetermine the ON or OFF time of any electrical appliances connected to it while the user attends to other things. Major components used are Arduino UNO microcontroller, relay, RTC timer, Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), and the 13 Amps socket outlet which powered any electrical appliances at a preset time. The design was implemented and tested with a mobile phone, toasting machine, and an electric cooker respectively. The results show that the system makes the next generation of homes safer and smarter. Consequently, it is cheaper, reliable, and easy to operate, which contributed effectively to the usage of a microcontroller for automation and convenient operation of electrical appliances whenever needed.
