Background: Ideal requirement of an intracanal medicament is that it should have an antibacterial action for the success of endodontic procedures. The "golden standard" intracanal medication is calcium hydroxide, but it still has drawbacks like internal root resorption. The search for an ideal intracanal medication that works well is an ongoing process that is still unsuccessful. In this pilot study, we attempted to search for new materials by drawing motivation from the earlier time. Ayurveda, started in India 3000 years back. Since many herbal products have demonstrated antibacterial, antiseptic, and analgesic properties, there has been renewed interest in them in recent years. Aim: To compare in-vitro, the antibacterial efficacy of a combination of herbal extracts i.e nutmeg + aloe vera, nutmeg + neem and nutmeg + distilled water with calcium hydroxide as an intracanal medicament on Enterococcus faecalis. Materials and Methods: The ATCC strain 29212 of the bacterium E. faecalis was used in the study. Mueller Hinton agar plate was vaccinated with E. faecalis. The herbal extract mixtures were pipetted into the agar wells on this agar plate, which had four wells with diameters ranging from 8 to 10 millimeters. After using calcium hydroxide as a control, which is the gold standard for intracanal medication, the plate was incubated. The width of the restraint zones around every one of the wells were estimated physically after hatching for 48 hrs. Results: The highest zone of inhibition was seen around the wells containing Nutmeg and its combinations. Nutmeg showed better antibacterial efficacy when compared to calcium hydroxide. Conclusion: Nutmeg shows promising results for its use as an antibacterial intracanal medicament.
A bstract Aim To evaluate and compare the antimicrobial efficacy of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and Aquatine Endodontic Cleanser (EC) with and without laser-activated disinfection against Enterococcus faecalis in the root canals of primary teeth. Materials and methods A total of 45 human primary teeth were selected and inoculated with E. faecalis and divided into three groups as per intervention. In group I, irrigation was done using 2.5% NaOCl, in group II using Aquatine EC solution, and in group III with Aquatine EC activated by 810 nm diode laser. Results Intragroup comparisons showed a decrease in colony-forming units in all three groups. Intergroup comparisons showed a statistically significant difference between group I and group II ( p = 0.024) and between group I and group III ( p = 0.03). Conclusion Aquatine EC showed maximum antimicrobial efficacy under laser activation. Introduction: Esthetic rehabilitation of a young child with early childhood caries or dental trauma is one of the most important treatment modalities in pediatric dentistry. Parental motivation is a vital factor for the placement of an anterior esthetic appliance. Case Report: The present article discusses about a case report that highlights the fabrication of a modified Groper’s appliance in a 3-year-old child with severe early childhood caries (S-ECC). Its design included the placement of stainless-steel bands on primary second molars attached to a wire containing an acrylic flange bearing trimmed acrylic teeth anteriorly and a distal stop on the canine in order to prevent distal migration. Conclusion: The appliance was functional and fulfilled the esthetic demands.
Introduction: Rampant caries is the most common chronic childhood disease leading to decreased oral function, undesirable esthetics and consequent malocclusion and psychological problems. Oral rehabilitation under general anesthesia under certain circumstances is the only choice for the comprehensive treatment of extremely young, emotionally immature patients unable to cope with the same on a dental chair. Case Report: This case report describes the challenging task of the full mouth rehabilitation of a 2-year-old patient with rampant caries having severely mutilated maxillary teeth under general anesthesia. Conclusion: Treatment under general anesthesia provides the advantage of providing thorough oral rehabilitation in a limited period of time, allowing immediate pain relief, even with little or no patient cooperation.
Studies have shown that early fluoride use or “low but excessive” fluoride intake during the development of teeth is a risk factor for dental fluorosis in both fluoridated and non-fluoridated environments. Fluorosis affects children under the age of six who have developing, unerupted, and erupted permanent teeth. This changes the appearance of the teeth and leads to mental disturbance. This review enumerates fluoride, fluoridated toothpastes and its utilization in children.
