Breastfeeding is an act of extreme importance for the development of the baby, because it is able to guarantee healthy development up to two years of age. With a well-balanced chemical composition, breast milk is able to meet the physiological needs of the baby. It is easily digested, quenches thirst and provides the first immune protection to the newborn. Therefore, it is essential that the woman has the support and help necessary for her to be able to carry it out successfully, and the nurse is an apt and essential professional at this time of promotion and support for breastfeeding. The objective was to carry out a literature review to investigate the scientific evidence on the importance of the nurse's role in the promotion and support of breastfeeding as well as its impacts on the health of the mother and the baby. The work seeks to answer what is the role of nursing during this period. For this, a search was carried out for scientific articles published in the last ten years in the Virtual Health Library. The support and assistance of the nurse prevents the early abandonment of breast milk and the introduction of formulas. The qualification of the professional and the construction of a bond with the patient allow the promotion of healthy habits. The strategies used were: individualized nursing consultation, group of pregnant women; workshops, educational lectures, videos and group activities. In this way, the importance of the nurse's role in the promotion and support provided to breastfeeding is concluded.
