Aim: To analyze the psychometric properties of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPS) in internal care units at a specific teaching hospital in the Czech Republic. Design: The paper has the character of a cross-sectional validation study. Methods: The study was conducted between November 2015 and January 2016. The convenience sample consisted of 207 registered nurses working in internal care units at a specific faculty hospital in the Czech Republic. Analysis of the psychometric properties of the HSOPS was conducted using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and reliability testing. Results: Acceptable psychometric properties of the HSOPS were verified in our study. We confirmed 12 components of the HSOPS, the same number stated in the original version from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The reliability of the instrument was evaluated using the Cronbach alpha coefficient, and is considered acceptable. Conclusion: These findings can help healthcare institutions to raise awareness of patient safety culture and to gain a comprehensive overview of the individual dimensions of patient safety culture. In the future, the instrument could help to compare the components of patient safety culture, not only at a national but also at an international level.
Objective: The paper aimed to present the results of an innovative strategy that combined role-playing and video training as an effective approach for teaching active listening skills in nursing training. Design: A descriptive cross-sectional study. Methods: The data collection was carried out by the standardised observation of the outcomes of how 58 Bachelor's degree nursing program students communicate in model situations. The record sheet was aimed at monitoring the skills of active listening and its verbal and nonverbal expressions. The data were analysed by quantitative and qualitative analysis. Results: The results indicate improvement in active listening skills after completing the training -in both verbal and non-verbal communication. Conclusions: By combining the role-playing method with video training and increasing the frequency of sessions, communication skills are improved, and therefore, the quality of nursing care may also be improved. The aim of the research was to demonstrate the positive effect of cognitive training on the state of cognitive functions in seniors with dementia. Design: Qualitative cross-sectional study. Methods: A total of 22 seniors who met the criteria (which we specified for listing in the selected sample) participated in the cognitive training. The seniors completed 14 lessons (each lasting 45 minutes) of intensive two-week group cognitive training. The content included exercises for practicing attention and concentration, mnemotechnics and their application in life, and tasks for practicing short-term and long-term memory. All seniors were initially examined with the MoCA-CZ test. After completing the group cognitive training, re-testing and final evaluation were performed. Microsoft Excel was used for statistical processing of the results. Results:The cognitive training demonstrated a slight increase in the MoCA test score by 1-4 points in 18 cases. In four cases, the score did not change. Thus, after 14 lessons of cognitive training, there was an average increase of the score by 2 points per person. Most of the participants also stated that the cognitive training was beneficial for them and encouraged them to be more active. Moreover, they felt an improvement in cognitive functions after completing it. Conclusions: Cognitive training has proven to be an effective tool in improving cognitive functions and activity in seniors with mild to moderate dementia.
From the perspective of modern nursing as a regulated profession, the quality of provided care is evaluated not only with the focus on performance but also on communication skills, which increase this quality as well as the overall saturation efficiency of patient's needs. The application of modern teaching methods in the process of acquiring communication skills is essential in the professional preparation of nurses. This contribution has a cross-sectional quantitative study design based on a questionnaire survey. The aim of this paper is to present an overview of the use of teaching methods in the communication preparation of nurses at universities in the Czech and Slovak Republics, including the results of the research carried out. Data collection was performed using an anonymous non-standardised questionnaire survey. The questionnaire items were focused on the use of teaching methods in subjects in nurse-patient communication subjects. The research group consisted of students of the first and second years of the full-time General Nurse bachelor study programme from universities and colleges in the Czech and Slovak Republics, who have completed communication lessons or related subjects. The final amount of processed and applicable questionnaires was 1267 (81.74%) of the total number of questionnaires sent. To process the data, the following statistical methods were used: data exploration analysis, descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The results confirm the retreat from the concept of "traditional lessons" to lessons where discussion dominates. However, the use of alternative teaching methods, such as role-play, was referred to as occasional by the majority of respondents. By increasing the frequency of using non-traditional teaching methods, there will be a greater acquisition of communication skills and hence a better quality of nursing care overall.
