The psychometrics of a 20-item rater-based Likert-format for measuring life history (LH) strategy, called the LH rating form, was investigated. The results of a pilot study indicated that the LH rating form had convergent validity with self-report measures of LH strategy, suggesting the need for further testing. In Study 1, it was found that although the LH rating form only has 20 items, its association with a Q-sort measure was as strong as LH rating form composed of 100 items. While the LH rating form had only a weak association with a Q-sort measure of LH strategy, it was as strong as the correspondence between self and other ratings for other traits. Study 2, indicated that acquaintance ratings using the LH rating form were positively associated with self-report measures of LH strategy. Study 3, suggested that the relationship between the LH rating form and self-report measures extends to ratings based on written information supplied by strangers, but as expected the relationship was weaker than when acquaintances were rated. Overall, the results point to the potential utility of the LH rating form and the need for further investigation.
