After the Industrial Revolution that took place in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Europe, increases in the machinery used, population and the need for energy have boosted the reliance on fossil fuels and the release of greenhouse gases. As a result of this, global temperatures, which had been in balance with the natural greenhouse effect, have increased, and the problem of climate change emerged. The search for a solution to this across boundaries phenomenon started to attract international attention in the 1970s. Since parochial actions cannot prevent climate change, the main arguments have concentrated on the fact that a solution is possible not through local or regional efforts but global ones, and each country’s contribution in proportion to its capabilities is necessary. Recent research has shown that if no solution is found, the temperatures will continue to increase even more, resulting in a severe threat to the living on earth. This article examined the factors that bring about climate change as a global problem, the symptoms and efforts related to this, and Turkey’s stance within this global effort.
This research aimed, using certain variables, to examine the international literature sources such as articles and papers between 1993-2021 via the Scopus database and subject them to bibliometric analysis on current vital topics, "climate change" and "sustainable development." Bibliometric analysis, frequently used in academic studies in recent years, has allowed investigation of the primary criteria, such as author names, article counts, citations and publication year of scientific publications. The current research has determined 343 scientific publications by typing “climate change” and “sustainable development” into the document search bar on the Scopus database. In the study, VOSviewer Software was used to perform bibliometric analysis and mapping of the publications indexed in the Scopus database. The study has found that most studies on topics "climate change" and "sustainable development" were conducted in 2021, with 44 studies. The rising number of studies in 2021 shows the growing importance of these issues in the modern world.
Although the climate crisis continues to show its effects without slowing down, global average temperatures increase in direct proportion to the increase in carbon dioxide. In addition, international political measures are insufficient and they are going on a plane where the interests of countries or companies are tried to be maintained rather than the fight against the climate crisis. The aviation and tourism sectors are at the top of these operating planes. In particular, the rapid growth of the aviation industry and its relationship with the development of tourism pose an essential problem for the future in the fight against the climate crisis. This study examined the average personal carbon footprint of the flights to Cappadocia Airport between 2016-2019. In particular, the Cappadocia region is an important tourism region of Turkey, but it comes to the fore with almost every take in the middle of Turkey. As a result, while there was an increase in the total carbon dioxide rate according to the number of flights, the personal carbon footprint showed an inverse proportion. Considering the location of the Cappadocia region and Turkey's transportation policy, transportation preferences should be reviewed in terms of both the state and construction.
The climate crisis increases the risk of threats to both our individual and social existence day by day. However, this threat is far from the attention and solution it deserves. For this reason, states (governments) that are responsible for protecting both the present and the future of humanity refrain from fulfilling this duty or taking on the role of making an effort. The increase in both emissions and global average temperatures from past to present shows that the fight against the climate crisis is only on paper or in rhetoric. This study examines the legal (judicial) solution that the public sees as a way out of the helplessness created by the climate crisis caused by the international system and governments. As a result, as citizens seek more rights and the judiciary decides in favor of the climate crisis, governments will strive for more solutions in tackling the climate crisis. Although this does not hold great promise in terms of the climate crisis, it will be beneficial for progress and awareness.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
