The interest regarding sustainable consumption has increased around the world, and several international institutions and organizations have highlighted the emergency that society needs to face from this century onwards. Sustainable consumption involves many factors other than individual behaviour, which usually leads to a cross-national focus to explain differences and similarities among countries. Cross-cultural investigations have emerged under the widespread context of sustainability, but how they can contribute to clarify sustainable consumption behaviour is as yet an incipient discussion. On this basis, and considering previous literature about value dimensions, the theory of planned behaviour (TPB), and the value-belief-norm theory (VBN), this paper undertakes a theoretical discussion drawing upon previous empirical research and proposes a new, alternative and complementary point of view. We address how cultural elements can influence values and, in turn, sustainable behaviour. Moreover, we argue that beliefs could be a key driver of sustainable intention, as the intention formed by attitude, perceived behavioural control and subjective norms does not explicate sustainable consumption by itself. Ultimately, this study combines various concepts in a wider discussion about cross-cultural sustainable consumption, a holistic perspective to investigate sustainable consumption across countries.
We analysed the influence of the characteristics of national business systems on the disclosure of gender-related corporate social responsibility practices by 150 companies in Latin America that signed the Declaration of Support for Women's Empowerment Principles. The highest level of disclosure was related to the establishment of high-level corporate leadership for gender equality. Results show that the country's level of "concentration of power" and "individualism", and the "orientation towards femininity" have a negative influence on the disclosure of gender-related practices; in addition, the country's level of "economic development" and the "pressure of unions" exert a positive influence. The results highlight the important role that some national and local institutions play in the women's empowerment, leading companies to report information on adopted practices. The study innovates and contributes by introducing the explanation of gender-related social disclosure with the national business system approach in Latin America.
Abstract The debate about performance measurement is growing among professionals and researchers, but it is still insufficient to consolidate measurement practices in the construction industry. Purpose In recent years, much has been discussed about new consumer practices based on the sharing economy. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to map out the international scientific production on sharing economy. Design/methodology/approach The research adopted a descriptive qualitative approach. Based on a sample of 95 documents collected in the Scopus database, analyses of bibliometric and sociometric indicators were carried out, as well as content analyses were conducted to identify the main thematic categories in the field. Findings The results show that sharing economy is an emerging topic, and of late, the research in this field has grown rapidly. The study provides a mapping of top journals and authors, works of greatest impact and of co-authorship, co-citation and bibliographic coupling networks, which evidence the low intensity of researcher’s interactions and scientific production dispersion in the field. The main subjects found in the sharing economy literature are determinants, motivations and barriers, sharing economy impacts, regulation, models and frameworks, critical approach and entrepreneurship and sharing-based new businesses. Research limitations/implications The analyses did not take into account the timing perspective. Further research could undertake a timeline-based approach in order to present direct citation networks and to relate works according to the year when they were published. Originality/value The study innovates by identifying the main subjects in the sharing economy literature, as well as by presenting network analysis for some bibliometric indicators, complementing previous research in the field.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
