Transition economies, such as China, are characterized by volatile and rapidly changing markets. Firms, in order to be successful and get a competitive advantage over their competitors, need to build intangible resources. In the light of the resource‐based view and dominant logic (DL), this study is an endeavor in this regard and proposes that DL and managerial capabilities are intangible resources, which can drive the performance of small‐ and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs). We hypothesized that dynamic managerial capabilities (DMCs), measured by human capital along with social capital and managerial cognition, play a mediating role in the relationship between DL, consisting of proactiveness and routine, and firm performance. The data in this study were obtained through a survey from 204 SMEs in China and were analyzed by structural equation modeling to generate results. We found that while successfully utilizing intangible/operant resources that are characterized as firm dynamic capabilities, SMEs can achieve superior performance and competitive advantage. Our results support the proposed hypotheses that show the importance and significance of DL and DMCs in order to attain higher level of performance. The concept of DL and its impact on SME's performance has been less researched in general, particularly in China. Limited research is available regarding intangible resources and their impact on SME performance in China.
PurposeThis study aims to explore the role of green motive (GM) and green dynamic capabilities (GDC) in green innovation (GI) through green value co-creation (GVC). Moreover, this study investigates the moderation of top management support (TMS) to strengthen the mediation of specific constructs; GM, GDC, green value co-creation (GVC) and green innovation (GI).Design/methodology/approachIn total, 337 respondents (executive level/chief executive officer (CEO)) of service organizations were approached using a convenience sampling technique to collect the data through the survey method. Of these, 294 (87% response rate) duly filled responses were used in the final data analysis. In SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) v-23, the Process Macro-Hayes was used to evaluate the study's conceptual framework empirically.FindingsThe study revealed that TMS strengthened the mediation framework of GM, GDC, GVC and GI. Moreover, all hypotheses related to direct and indirect associations of specific constructs used in the theoretical framework were statistically significant and proved.Originality/valueThe comprehensive framework for GI of service organizations, primarily in the context of developing countries like Pakistan, is deficient in literature. This study helps service organizations by providing a comprehensive GI model to put a central focus on the transformation of management philosophy and working approach for achieving GI in the services structure.
Knowledge is key to firm growth. Managers perform knowledge-based managerial roles that foster firm growth. Surprisingly, little attention has been paid to examine the role of knowledge-based managerial roles in business model innovation (BMI). To fill this gap, the purpose of this study is to examine the impact of knowledge-based managerial roles (interpersonal, informational and decisional) in facilitating BMI within the context of family-owned businesses (FOBs) in Pakistan. This research employed a quantitative research design with a deductive-research approach, and the survey method is used to collect data from FOBs of Pakistan. Data collected were analysed through SPSS 23.0 and Smart PLS 3.0. Structural equation modeling (SEM) is used to test the different relationships proposed between selected variables. Results of study exhibit that knowledge-based managerial roles (IPR, IFR and DCR) have positive and significant associations with both BMI and knowledge-creation process. Further, the knowledge-creation process acts as a partial significant mediator between all three types of Mintzberg managerial roles and BMI. The study presents a novel contribution for government and policymakers to realize the importance of FOBs and create opportunities for their survival and growth that will boost up the economic growth of the country.
