Aim:Based on the importance of coronal sealing right after endodontic treatment, this in vitro study aimed to evaluate the difference of shear bond strength to pulp chamber dentin treated with sodium thiosulfate and proanthocyanidin (PA).Materials and Methods:Fifteen extracted mandibular molar teeth were decoronated at the level of cementoenamel junction horizontally. The individual teeth were then sectioned mesiodistally to expose the pulp chamber dentin using a diamond disc. The specimens were randomly divided into three groups (n = 10). Group A: control group, treated with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) for 30 min followed by a final rinse with 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) solution for 3 min; Group B: after pretreatment with NaOCl and EDTA, it is further treated with 5% sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3) for 10 min; and Group C: after pretreatment with NaOCl and EDTA, it is further treated with 6.5% PA for 10 min. After drying the specimens, a bonding agent namely One Coat Bond SL (SwissTEC, Coltene) was applied to the pulp chamber dentin followed by a composite restoration (SwissTEC, Coltene). Each specimen was then tested under a universal testing machine at the dentin/resin interface to determine the shear bond strength. Results:Both the groups in which 5% Na2S2O3 and 6.5% PA were used for 10 min showed bond strength that was found to be statistically higher than the positive control (P < 0.05).Conclusion:The use of Na2S2O3 and PA can significantly increase the bond strength of composite resin to NaOCl/EDTA-treated dentin, allowing adhesive restorations to be immediately applied after endodontic treatment.
Aims and Objective:The aim of this study was to evaluate the orthodontic treatment need in 11–14-year-old schoolchildren of Central Bengaluru, India, using the index of orthodontic treatment need (IOTN) and to analyze the treatment needs between males and females and correlation between the esthetic to aesthetic (AC) and dental health component (DHC) of IOTN.Materials and Methods:The sample comprised 500 schoolchildren (187 females and 313 males) who had not undergone orthodontic treatment. No radiographs, study casts, were used; IOTN was calculated from clinical examination and photographs. The data were analyzed using SPSS 20 IBM version. Results:The results for DHC were as follows: 12% students in no need, 52.5% students in little need, 20.5% students in moderate or borderline, 11.5% students in severe need, and 3.5% students were in the category of very severe need for treatment. On evaluating AC components, 91.6% were in the category of no or little need, 2% students in moderate need, and 6.4% in great need category. Mild positive correlation (r = 0.153) between DHC and AC of IOTN was observed. The difference between the IOTN values of boys and girls was not statistically significant. Conclusions:More than 50% of the population in our study showed little/no need category which undergoes undiagnosed and may not seek dental treatment at right time to prevent the future complications. This study provides baseline data on the need and demand for orthodontic treatment among the sample which is important for planning public orthodontic and dental services.
AIM: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of various intermediate irrigating solutions in the removal of orange-brown precipitate formed due to alternative use of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and chlorhexidine (CHX) root canal irrigants.
METHODS: The root canals of 50 mandibular premolars were prepared using ProTaper Universal Rotary instruments (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) up to size F3. The roots were randomly divided into five experimental groups specified by the intermediate irrigant used; Group 1: No intermediate irrigant used (control), Group 2: Saline, Group 3: 7% maleic acid (MA), Group 4: 4% sodium thiosulfate, and Group 5: 70% isopropyl alcohol (n = 10). After final irrigation with CHX, the specimens were evaluated for the presence/absence of orange-brown precipitate under stereomicroscope.
RESULTS: Mean precipitate for all experimental groups was calculated using ANOVA F test which showed orange-brown precipitate (parachloroanaline) in all groups except Group 4 and Group 5 which were highly significant (p < 0.001) at all the levels of root canal. Intergroup pairwise comparison was done using Tukey’s post hoc test.
CONCLUSION: About 7% MA is effective in minimizing the formation of orange-brown precipitate when used as intermediate irrigant between NaOCl and CHX. However, the precipitate was not observed with 4% sodium thiosulfate and 70% isopropyl alcohol.
