This study aims to investigate students' perception on their critical thinking and problem solving skill. It also aims to determine whether there are differences between genders and academic disciplines on this skill. A sample of 2000 undergraduate students from six Malaysian public universities completed the survey. Findings indicate that students perceived they have high critical thinking and problem solving skill. It is also revealed that male students are perceived to have better critical thinking and problem solving skill. Social science students appear to perform better in this skill, as compared to science and engineering students.
The purpose of this research is to examine job satisfaction among auditors and the relationships between internal as well as external factors and job satisfaction. The research also examines internal and external factors of motivation; dimensions for internal factors include achievements, advancement, work itself, recognition and growth while for external, the dimensions are company policy, relationship with peers, work security, supervisory relationship, money, and working conditions. This research is guided by Herzberg’s Two Factor Theory which explains the difference between motivation and hygiene factors that can lead to job satisfaction. Data were collected using an online questionnaire distributed to auditors in Johor state audit firms with diverse personal and professional backgrounds. The results show that both internal and external factors of motivation have significant positive relationships with job satisfaction. ‘Achievement’ and ‘Growth’ are dominant internal factors of motivation towards job satisfaction while ‘Company policy’ and ‘Relationship with Supervisors’ are dominant external factors of motivation. The results of this research provide indicators to the employers, particularly audit firms, on the factors that influence job satisfaction, thus these employers could take appropriate actions in ensuring the well-being of their employees who are in this context are auditors.
Abstract-This paper aims to determine the ethics of undergraduate students in four aspects of moral processes; awareness, judgement, intention and behaviour. It further explores the impact of gender and academic disciplines on these four moral processes. A total of 2000 undergraduate students from six public universities in Malaysia involved in this study. Data were collected through survey consists of 14 ethical statements developed based on previous studies. Descriptive analysis (such as mean), t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were employed for the data analysis. Overall, results reveal that student's ethical level was mixed. The results also demonstrate that engineering students have low level of ethics, as compared to social science and science students. In terms of gender differences, female students appear to have higher level of ethics than their male counterparts. The findings of this study provide some educational and theoretical implications.
Critical thinking and problem solving skill is important for university students to increase their chances of securing a work placement. One way to improve this skill is believed through experiences gained from an industrial training. This study aims to investigate the impact of industrial training on the improvement of students’ critical thinking and problem solving skill. Further, it aims to explore the influence of selected factors on this skill improvement. These selected factors are demographic profiles of students, supervisors and organization, students’ motivation, job scope, supervisor leadership styles and organizational culture. The study adapted Belbin Team Role Self-Perception Inventory as the research instrument of the re-search. A total of 1,227 students and 485 students from six public universities in Malaysia, have completed the pre survey and post survey respectively. Using paired t-test analysis, result exhibited that students’ shown improvement in their critical thinking and problem solving upon completion of their industrial training. The results also exhibited that this skill improvement is best predicted when students performed independence job scope, being supervised by male supervisor and the supervisor and when the supervisors exercise transformational leadership styles. Some practical and empirical implications were drawn from the findings of this study.
