The war against cancer has seen a proliferation in armamentarium over the last decades. A new antineoplastic agent, trastuzumab, was synthesized in 1991 and gained United States Food and Drug Administration approval in 1998 for treatment of metastatic breast cancer. Cardiotoxicity manifesting as dilated cardiomyopathy is a rarely reported adverse effect of trastuzumab. We hereby report a case of dilated cardiomyopathy, which occurred following trastuzumab chemotherapy in a 32–year-old female. The patient responded to discontinuation of trastuzumab and standard medical treatment. Extensive search of Indian literature revealed no reported case of dilated cardiomyopathy occurring due to trastuzumab.
Kerosene ingested, intentionally or accidentally, is toxic. Data is scarce on complications and outcomes of hydrocarbon poisoning following kerosene aspiration in adults and there has been no known case of bilateral hemorrhagic effusion occurring due to it in literature. We, hereby, report a case of a bilateral hemorrhagic pleural effusion secondary to hydrocarbon aspiration in a 40-year old adult.
A 50-year-old woman presented to Department of General Surgery of G.S.V.M. Medical College with a painless scalp lump. She had noticed a small lump while combing her hair, three months back. It had progressively increased to its present size but was asymptomatic except for the cosmetic defect, so she ignored it. She had no history of trauma, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, yellowish discolouration of eyes, headache or dizziness. She had no history of smoking, chewing tobacco or any other addictions. Her past history was not significant. Her medical history, on perusal of records revealed that she had gone to an unqualified local practitioner, a day prior to attending our centre. He had suspected it to be an abscess and had incised the lump. The patient revealed that bleeding started, so the wound was dressed and she was referred to our Department immediately.
A hydatid cyst in retroperitoneal space is uncommon and one in the pancreatic head region is rare. We hereby report a case of a 20-year-old male presenting with a retroperitoneal hydatid cyst of the pancreatic head region. Investigations revealed no hydatid cysts in other organs of the body. The diagnosis was confirmed at laparotomy and partial pericystectomy was performed. Hydatid cyst should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cystic lesions of retroperitoneal area.
