Brain incorporation of [1-14C]arachidonate ([14C]AA; 170 microCi/kg), [1-14C]docosahexaenoate ([14C]DA; 100 microCi/kg), or [9,10-3H]palmitate ([3H]PA; 6.4 mCi/kg) infused intravenously for 5 min was examined in the awake rat following systemic administration of the cholinomimetic arecoline (15 mg/kg i.p.). The rat was killed 15 min after infusion, and the brain was removed, frozen, and prepared for biochemical analysis and autoradiography. Brain radioactivity, normalized for plasma exposure, was increased by 41 and 45% in arecoline-treated rats given [14C]AA and [14C]DA, respectively. Pretreatment with atropine prevented the increase in fatty acid incorporation. Arecoline treatment had no effect on brain incorporation of [3H]PA. Quantitative autoradiography indicated regionally selective increases in brain [14C]AA and [14C]DA incorporation in response to arecoline. The results suggest that intravenously administered radiolabeled fatty acids can be used to study neurotransmitter-stimulated brain lipid metabolism in vivo.
Hajdu-Cheney syndrome is a rare congenital disease with acro-osteolysis, osteoporotic changes of the spine and long bones of extremities and marked basilar invagination with an unusually deformed skull. Magnetic resonance imaging of a 32-year-old male revealed the deformed skull and almost horizontal basal angle and the elongated and upwardly shifted brain stem caused by the tip of the odontoid process of the second cervical vertebra invaginating the base of the skull. In addition there were atrophic pituitary gland, widely open sella turcica and symmetrical fluid collections along the optic nerve sheath.
Medium-density polyethylene (PE) thin films have been successfully prepared by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. The absorbance obtained by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) measurement was proportional to the number of deposited layers, indicating that the layer-by-layer deposition of PE films proceeded successfully. Using the Kelvin probe surface potential measurement, it was concluded that as-deposited PE films were positively charged due to the displacement of electrons from the film to a metal. Finally, an energy diagram of the alkane oligomer molecule C 30 H 62 was computed based on an ab initio molecular orbital calculation, and then the possibility of positive charging of the PE film was discussed.
