High removal of nitrophenols that have a certain degree of solubility in water is a challenge for industrial wastewater treatment. Here, we have successfully prepared novel embeddedtype magnetic MIL-53(Al) (named Fe 3 O 4 /SiO 2 /MIL-53(Al)) composites via the hydrothermal method. Fe 3 O 4 /SiO 2 particles are embedded into cubic MIL-53(Al), in which Al 3+ first chelates with OH on the surface of SiO 2 to form nucleation. The composites possess rapid magnetic response with a saturation magnetization of about 35 emu•g −1 . Magnetic MIL-53(Al) composites performed well in 2-nitroresorcinol adsorption from water, the equilibrium absorption amount of which is about 118 mg•g −1 . The effective adsorbed property is mainly owing to the high porosity, the breathing transition of flexible pores in MIL-53(Al), the acid−base reaction between the Al-OH of MIL-53(Al) and 2-nitroresorcinol, and the hydrogen interaction between 2-nitroresorcinol inside the pores.
