Contribution/ OriginalityThis study is one of very few studies, which have investigated into the effective methods and appropriate tools to carry out the demolition of existing structures so that the debris can be put into the reuse or recycling operations, getting useful products and also save Mother Earth from unsustainable degradation.
Sustainability evaluation of two iconic bridge corridors under construction using Fuzzy Vikor technique: A case studyABSTRACTTwo iconic bridge projects over river Yamuna in Delhi under construction have been evaluated from sustainability criteria using Fuzzy-Vikor technique. The Barapulla elevated road project was more found to be more sustainable in comparison to the Signature bridge project in terms of various indicators identified during the study. In general, the goals of providing sustainable features are finding a balance between what is important to the community, to the natural environment and is economically sound. O Projeto de Via Elevada de Barapulla foi considerado o mais sustentável em comparação com o Projeto Signature Bridge em termos de vários indicadores identificados durante o estudo. Em geral, os objetivos de fornecer recursos sustentáveis são os de encontrar um equilíbrio entre o que é importante para a comunidade, para o ambiente natural e é economicamente sólido. <p>The presently under construction at Delhi over river Yamuna Signature Bridge is an iconic bridge of its kind which is languid in perpetual motion in the tradition of Calatrava’s Bridges in motion to the onlookers where very high importation of technology is involved.</p><p>The very complex geometry of the slanted steel pylon with its three dimensionally varying Indian welcoming (Namaste) pose involves high precision fabrication, machining and drilling including the trial assemblies of fabricated segments were carried out in China from economic considerations under strict vigilance and supervision.</p><p>The unprecedented nature of design of foundations, bearings and the pylon called for ingenious and first time construction engineering and methodology to be evolved whether for hybrid foundations, concrete technology, erection of large capacity and special type of bearings, fabrication, trial assemblies, welding including very long and critical in situ welding of pylon base and finally segmental erection of three dimensionally varying pylon.</p>
For the last several billion years, nature has nurtured the planet evolving complex Eco-systems that conserve and recycle energy and materials. Climate change is the most visible result – storms, droughts, floods and the like are rising in frequency and severity and the consensus is that we are to be blamed. Civil constructions in urban areas are essential for overall development and benefits of the community, but, it is more important that every such activity be environment friendly as the Environment too has a right to remain protected from any kind of damages. We are, however, the agents of our own eventual doom. We are gradually choking and poisoning ourselves. This paper covers the attempt in sustainable designing and construction of series of flyovers, Underpasses, River Bridges and other infrastructure projects taken up in the new millennium in New Delhi, the capital city of India. The successful efforts in achieving sustainability are discussed specifically in case of Mukarba Chowk Grade Separator and Barapulla Elevated Road projects. To assess the amount of the degradation and attempt for sustainable construction, it is essential to understand the environmental characteristics of the area in which structure is taking birth. Once a sincere assessment is done, then it is the core part of ethics of any Engineering to mitigate the degradation and achieve sustainability.
