GTE's Compass (Central O f f i e Maintenance Printout Analysis and Suggestion System) is an expert system that aids in the mainmanee of a telephone switching gstem. It analyzes maintenance printouts of telephone company central offie switching equipment and w e s t s maintenance actions to be performed. The results fiom several f i l d trials indicate that the cutrent version of Compass p e r f m well in identifurng system faults and in suggesting cmespondang maintenance actions. An expanded version of the expert system is under development while the present version is being put into fwld use.
