SummaryOvarian steroid cell tumors are very rare functioning sex-cord stromal tumors. They comprise <0.1% of all ovarian tumors. Previously designated as lipoid cell tumors, one-third of these tumors are considered malignant with the mean age of presentation at around 40 years. We present a case of a 28-year-old female with 2-year history of hirsutism, virilization, and amenorrhea. She was diagnosed with left ovarian tumor, for which she underwent left salpingo-oophorectomy. Histopathology revealed not otherwise specified subtype of steroid cell tumors. The patient resumed menses 2 months after the features of masculinization regressed. Within 1 year of surgery, the patient successfully conceived a full-term baby without any complications. In a young female, the neoplastic etiology of a rapid virilization or menses changing should always be kept in mind. Though commonly observed in adult females, steroid cell tumors have very good surgical outcomes if age at presentation is less and tumor is unilateral, and there are no evidences of bilateral malignancy. Bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy is not required.Learning points
In a case of severe rapid hirsutism and virilization with serum testosterone level more than 200 ng/dl or more than threefold of the normal range, neoplastic conditions should always be suspected.Steroid cell tumor in young women without evidence of malignancy on histopathology has excellent surgical outcomes.Unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy is the surgery of choice. As the frequency of bilateralism is only 6%, prophylactic unaffected side oophorectomy need not be done.
Using leaf explants of IN VITRO grown HYOSCYAMUS ALBUS and H. MUTICUS plantlets, hairy roots were induced following inoculation with AGROBACTERIUM RHIZOGENES strains A (4) and LBA-9402. The transformed roots, appearing after 14 - 17 days incubation on hormone-free MS medium containing 1 g/L cephalexin, were excised and maintained in the same medium. Ten randomly selected hairy root lines from each bacterial treatment of the two plant systems were compared for growth and alkaloid production in half-strength, hormone-free MS medium on 25 (th) day of culture. A. RHIZOGENES strain - A (4) induced hairy root lines of both H. ALBUS and H. MUTICUS were comparatively faster growing than those induced by strain LBA-9402. In contrast to earlier reports, some of the hairy root lines of H. ALBUS induced by A. RHIZOGENES strain A (4) were as fast growing as the hairy root lines of H. MUTICUS. The atropine yields of A (4) induced lines of H. ALBUS were significantly higher (3.5 fold) than the LBA-9402 induced lines. No such relationship between the bacterial strain and alkaloid productivity could, however, be obtained in case of hairy root lines of H. MUTICUS.
Melasma is a symmetrical hypermelanosis of the exposed skin characterized by brown macules on the sun-exposed areas of the skin. The present study was carried out on 43 patients to analyze the correlation between histopathological features with clinical and Wood's light examination. The study showed a clinical and histopathological discordance of 16.2%. Solar elastosis (55.8%) was the single most common histological finding apart from increased melanin concentration, epidermal flattening and dermal lymphomononuclear inflammation.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
