AbStl%U!tFlorid cemento-osseous dysplasia refers to a group of fibrossseous lesions which are exuberant, multiquadrant and arise from the tooth-bearing area of the jaws. It is classically described as a condition occurring almost exclusively in middle-aged black women. A case of florid cemento-osseous dysplasia occurring in a young Chinese male is reported which was rare in regard to race and sex. This 20 year old Chinese man presented with huge symmetrical bony lesions in all four quadrants of the jaws. Clinical presentation, radiological findings and histological features of the excised specimens are described. Treatment of the lesions was unusual. Curettage was first done with minimal benefit and it was followed by mandibular recontouring to improve facial appearance. The outcome of these procedures will be discussed.
Osteosarcomas are highly malignant neoplasms of bone that are challenging to diagnose. These neoplasms often show atypical behavior. In the initial phase they may present as nondescript bony swellings with an indolent growth rate, only to become overtly aggressive and malignant towards the later phase of the disease. Similarly, the histological growth pattern of this neoplasm can be quite diverse, presenting with areas that mimic benign myofibroblastic tumors, giant cell granulomatous conditions and partial encapsulation. The final diagnosis of an osteosarcoma is often reached after thorough sampling and examination of multiple biopsy specimens. All these clinical features and histological diagnostic difficulties were encountered in a case of osteosarcoma affecting the right mandible of a 62-year-old Chinese woman described here. The diagnostic lessons accrued from this case are discussed.
The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of C02 laser in relieving symptoms associated with Oral lichen planus (aLP) and lichenoid lesions (aLL) and the event of healing. Six patients were selected for this study with 13 sites treated. Each lesion was ablated with C02 laser and the wound allowed to heal undisturbed. Prior to treatment, 4 patients had both unprovoked and provoked pain and 2 patients rated for provoked pain only. After laser ablation, five out of six patients treated recorded no pain / 0 pain score. One month post-laser, the treated area was almost the same colour as the surrounding normal mucosa and soft in texture in all but one patient in which there was some fibrosis and residual plaque-like patch. We conclude that the use of C02 laser in the treatment of aLP and aLL shows positive results in relieving symptoms associated with these lesions.
This paper represents a study of 35 cases of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) diagnosed in a Malaysian population. The clinical, radiological and histopathological features, treatment modalities and recurrence of this lesion were analysed. There was a higher prevalence rate among Malaysian Chinese (51.42 percent), while the Malays and Indians accounted for 22.86 percent and 25.72 percent respectively. The male to female ratio was 16 : 19. Age at presentation ranged from nine to 71 year, with about 70 percent occurring between ages ten to 39 years. A total of 40 cysts were analysed. Of these, 67.5 percent occurred in the mandible and 32.5 percent in the maxilla. About 88 percent of OKC presented as unilocular radiolucencies and 42.0 percent were associated with unerupted or impacted teeth. Histologically, the parakeratinized OKC was the predominant variant found (75.8 percent). The majority of cases were treated by enucleation (85 percent), and a recurrence rate of 20 percent was recorded.
