Objective: Risk factors of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) have been linked with diets, life style and viral infections. NPC is more rampant in Asian populations than non-Asian countries. Our study aims to assess the validity of the suggestions provided by multiple case control studies demonstrating that salted fish consumption, smoking and alcohol consumption are associated with the risk of NPC in Asia. Methods: Search for related literature on salted fish, smoking and alcohol consumption were performed via Science Direct, PubMed databases and Google Scholar. Articles included in this study were from 2009 to 2017, with specific focus on salted fish, smoking and alcohol consumption as risk factors of NPC. This study excluded all articles published prior to 2009 and articles involving other cancers. Data were extracted independently by two different researchers and harmonized. Meta-analysis was conducted on the obtained data, by using R package Meta to create funnel and forest plots. Background The changing epidemiology of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) from a hospital-associated pathogen to an organism commonly found in the community and in livestock reflects an organism well-equipped to survive in diverse environments and adjust to different environmental conditions including antimicrobial use. Methods We investigated the molecular epidemiology of S. aureus and MRSA in poultry in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. Samples were collected from 1800 birds on 9 different farms within the state. Positive isolates were tested for antibiotic susceptibility and molecular typing. Results Prevalence in birds was 13.7% (247/1800). MRSA prevalence in poultry was 0.8%. The prevalence of MRSA in broilers and layers was 1.2% and 0.4%, respectively. All tested isolates were susceptible to vancomycin. Molecular analysis of the isolates revealed 3 spa types: t002, t084, and a novel spa type, t11469. The novel spa type t11469 belonged to sequence type ST5. Conclusion The detection of t002 in chicken suggests the presence of livestock-associated MRSA in poultry in Ebonyi State. The detection of the new spa type t11469 in poultry that has not been characterised to ascertain its pathogenic potential remains a cause for concern, especially as some were found to carry PVL genes, a putative virulence factor in staphylococcal infection.
Redox homeostasis is attained by the cautious regulation of both reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and removal from the body system. A shift in ROS balance promotes oxidative injury and tumour development by inflicting damage to DNA and inducing inconsistencies in the genome. The sources of endogenous ROS in a cell include mETC, NOX, LOX, cytochrome P450 and XO. The exogenous risk factors of ROS are pollutants, chemicals/drugs, radiation and heavy metals. Oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondria produces ROS with unpaired electrons. Superoxide anion is the major ROS produced in the human mitochondria. Bulk of the ROS generation in the mitochondria occurs at the electron transport chain as derivatives of respiration. Cancer cells sustain ROS production by suppressing the antioxidant-generation system. Balance between ROS production and subsequent detoxification is regulated by scavenging enzymes and antioxidant agents. Failure in sirtuin-3 (SIRT3), ATM and p53 activities elevates the intracellular levels of ROS. PKCα induces the expression of NOX (DUOX) during cancer development and the consequent increase in ROS production. The PI3K/AKT signalling pathway activates NOX with consequent ROS production and subsequent induction of instability in the genome, leading to cancer. In conclusion, the interruption of the redox pathways that regulate ROS and its redox signalling activities affects cell physiology and can ultimately result in abnormal signalling, uncontrolled oxidative impairment and tumorigenesis.
