The purpose of this study was to examine students' language learning strategies in one private bilingual junior high school in Jambi, Indonesia. Data were collected through SILL questionnaires and face to face interviews. The questionnaires were analyzed statistically while the interviews data were transcribed and analyzed line by line from all participants. The SILL questionnaires and interviews were used to seek the students' types of language learning strategy and the differences of language learning strategies between female and male students. Overall, the findings revealed that participants mostly used memory strategies and there were no significant differences between male and female students in using language learning strategies in learning English. Suggestions and policy implications are also discussed.
The purpose of this current study was to explore the demotivating factors among Indonesian senior high school English teachers in teaching English as a foreign language at two senior high schools in Jambi City, Indonesia through demographic background surveys and semi-structured in-depth interviews. The research design was qualitative in the case approach. The interviews data were analyzed through using the constant comparative method developed by Glaser and Strauss (1967), six salient and interweaved themes related to the demotivating factors that emerged in this research were students' limited basic knowledge in English language, students' lack of motivation, school environment, limited supporting facilities, working conditions, and teachers' workload. Policy recommendations and implications of findings and future research are also discussed.
This study investigated classroom management, the implementation process and problems experienced by teachers in Indonesian schools in accordance with the latest 2013 Indonesian curriculum (K-13). This study was a mix-method study with a sequential exploratory approach. The main data were obtained qualitatively from thirty interview sessions with 15 teachers followed by quantitative data collection, survey with 452 teachers. The sites of the study were fifteen national senior high schools of one province located in the southern part of Indonesia. To assess the trustworthiness or reliability and validity of the study, we did triangulation, member checking and reflexivity in the qualitative phase and content validity and measured the survey Cronbach Alpha in the quantitative phase. The findings informed teaching standards, rules and procedures, classroom condition and situation, and timetable or schedule as the theme of the study in relation to the implementation process of K-13 in the research sites. Problems such as large class, teachers’ lack of technology competence, and schools’ lack of facilities as well as lack of discipline were elaborated. Furthermore, policy recommendations are proposed based on the findings of the study.
The growing need for English as a key to global communication, relations, and information, is noticeable in schools around the world. In response to these imperatives of global competitiveness, one of the private bilingual schools in Indonesia has adopted English as a medium of instruction (EMI). The aim of this study was to explore the implementation of English as a language of instruction in a bilingual school in teaching contents in one private bilingual school in Jambi City, Indonesia. The data were collected through demographic profiles, documents, and semi-structured in-depth interviews. The documents were used to find out the comprehensive overview of the bilingual education program while the in-depth interviews were used to ask participants to narrate their accounts and perspectives on the use of English as the medium of instruction at a micro (classroom) level. Overall, the findings of this study revealed that the successful implementation of English as a language of instruction in a bilingual school were interrelatedly challenged by teachers’ attitude and ability to use English, language policy, teaching materials, students’ English proficiency, curriculum, student assessment, and admission policy. Implications and suggestions for future research are also discussed.
Penyelenggaraan kegiatan-kegiatann yang dilakukan oleh sekolah sudah semestinya didasarkan pada tata kerja yang ada. Dari sini berperan fungsi-fungsi manajemen yaitu perencanaan, pengorganisasian, pelaksanaan dan terakhir evaluasi. Setiap program kegiatan yang dilaksanakan sudah semestinya dilakukan kegiatan evaluasi untuk melihat sejauh mana manfaat suatu program kegiatan beserta kekurangan-kekurangan dan hambatan-hambatan yang ada. Penyusunan tata kerja sekolah merupakan langkah untuk membuat suatu perencanaan terhadap program-program kegiatan sekolah. Selain itu, penyusunan tata kerja sekolah juga merupakan prosedur kerja bagi setiap warga sekolah dalam melaksanakan pekerjaan sesuai tugas, pokok dan fungsinya. Analisis evaluasi terhadap program kegiatan sekolah merupakan upaya kontrol untuk melihat sejuah mana program kegiatan sekolah dijalankan serta manfaatnya bagi perkembangan sekolah tersebut. Evaluasi merupakan sebuah perbaikan dan penyempurnaan serta penilaian apakah suatu program kegiatan sekolah dapat diteruskan atau tidak perlu dilanjutkan. Pelatihan Penyusunan Tata Kerja dan Analisis Evaluasi Sekolah ini dipandang penting dalam rangka meningkatkan kinerja sekolah yang juga berpengaruh pada peningkatan mutu pendidikan. Hasil akhir dari pengabdian ini akan sangat berguna bagi pengambil kebijakan dalam meningkatkan kinerja sekolah.
