Traditional seed pretreatment methods cause secondary pollution for the application of various chemicals. This study investigated the effect of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) cold plasma on seedling growth. Effects of plasma-activated tap water (PATW) and plasma-activated seeds (PAS) were compared for germination rates, seedling height, dry weight, and chlorophyll content. Results show that compared with controls these growth parameters were all increased by more than 50%. The yields and contributions of hydrogen peroxide, nitrate, nitrite, and ammonium were quantified. Hydrogen peroxide and nitrate have an important role in seedling growth. By etching, the seed epidermis free radicals can reduce the apparent contact angle and increase the water absorption of the seeds. In addition to the low cost of PATW and PAS compared with commercial fertilizers, DBD does not involve any chemical addition. Thus, both PATW and PAS can be an alternative for improvement of agricultural production.
Aim To clarify the association between the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the NLRP1 and NLRP3 and Psoriasis Vulgaris (PsV) in the Chinese Han population. Methods We genotyped eight SNPs, four from NLRP1 (rs8079034, rs11651270, rs11657747, and rs878329) and NLRP3 (rs7512998, rs3806265, rs10754557, and rs10733113) each in 540 patients with PsV and 612 healthy controls in the Chinese Han population using an improved multiplexed ligation detection reaction (iMLDR) method. The genotype and haplotype frequencies were analyzed using a case-control study design. Results We identified two SNPs, rs3806265 and rs10754557, in NLRP3 that were significantly associated with PsV. The genotype distribution of the rs3806265 SNP was significantly different between cases and controls (p = 0.0451; OR = 0.791; 95% CI = 0.627–0.998). In the recessive model, the genotype distribution of the rs10754557 SNP was significantly different between cases and controls (p = 0.0344; OR = 1.277; 95% CI = 0.987–1.652). The haplotype analysis of rs3806265 and rs10754557 also presented a significant association of TA haplotype with PsV (χ2 = 4.529; p = 0.033). Conclusion NLRP3 may play a role in PsV susceptibility in the Chinese Han population.
Immunoglobulin (Ig) E and IgG anti-thyroid autoantibodies (AAbs) play important roles in the immunopathogenesis of chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU). To date, association of IgE and IgG AAbs with Chinese CSU patients has not been fully investigated. We aimed to explore prevalence rates of IgE and IgG AAbs in Chinese CSU patients and their association with clinical and laboratory parameters. Serum IgE and IgG AAbs against thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and thyroglobulin (TG), total IgE (tIgE) and specific IgEs were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, chemiluminescence microparticle immunoassay and immunoblotting. Meta-analyses and literature review were conducted. The meta-analyses indicated that CSU cases were 4.98, 6.90 and 6.68 times more likely to have positive anti-TPO IgE, anti-TPO IgG and anti-TG IgG (all P < 0.001) compared with controls, respectively, and revealed a positive correlation between the prevalence rates of anti-TPO IgE and anti-TPO IgG ( r = 0.53, P = 0.025). A total of 1,100 Chinese Han adult CSU patients and 1,100 ethnicity-, age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited from 15 centers. Prevalence rates of anti-TPO IgE, anti-TPO IgG, anti-TG IgE or anti-TG IgG in the patients were all significantly higher than those in the controls. Significant correlations were observed between prevalence rates of anti-TPO IgE and anti-TPO IgG ( r = 0.297, P < 0.001) as well as between those of anti-TG IgE and anti-TG IgG in the patients ( r = 0.137, P < 0.001). Patients with anti-TPO IgE or anti-TPO IgG had significantly lower tIgE levels ( P < 0.001). Positive anti-TPO IgE, positive anti-TPO IgG and tIgE < 40 IU/mL were independent predictors of antihistamine-refractory cases. In conclusion, the prevalence rates of IgE and IgG AAbs in Chinese CSU patients are significantly elevated and reciprocally correlated. This study verifies the results of previous case-control studies of CSU patients from other populations and ethnicities.
Objective Proinflammatory cytokines mediate anxiety and depression in various ways, such as immunity, inflammation, and the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis. This study intended to further explore the linkage of common proinflammatory cytokine levels with anxiety and depression in psoriasis patients. Methods Totally, 150 psoriasis patients and 50 healthy controls (HCs) were included; the serum samples were collected, then common proinflammatory cytokines were measured by ELISA. Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was assessed. Results HADS‐anxiety (HADS‐A) score, HADS‐depression (HADS‐D) score, TNF‐α, IL‐1β, IL‐6, IL‐12, IL‐17A, and IL‐23 were all increased in psoriasis patients compared to HCs (all p < 0.05). In psoriasis patients, TNF‐α ( p = 0.001), IL‐12 ( p = 0.035), and IL‐17A ( p < 0.001), but not IL‐1β ( p = 0.255), IL‐6 ( p = 0.248), and IL‐23 ( p = 0.216), were positively linked to HADS‐A score. Meanwhile, TNF‐α ( p = 0.007) and IL‐17A ( p = 0.007) were enhanced in psoriasis patients with anxiety in contrast to those without anxiety; whereas IL‐1β ( p = 0.178), IL‐6 ( p = 0.360), IL‐12 ( p = 0.239), and IL‐23 ( p = 0.450) were not different. TNF‐α ( p < 0.001), IL‐1β ( p = 0.013), Il‐17A ( p < 0.001), and IL‐23 ( p = 0.023), but not IL‐6 ( p = 0.143) and IL‐12 ( p = 0.158), were positively linked to HADS‐D score. Concurrently, TNF‐α ( p = 0.015), IL‐17A ( p < 0.001), and IL‐23 ( p = 0.017) were climbed in psoriasis patients with depression by comparison to those without depression; whereas IL‐1β ( p = 0.113), IL‐6 ( p = 0.237), IL‐12 ( p = 0.660) did not differ. Conclusion TNF‐α, IL‐17A, and IL‐23 increments reflect anabatic anxiety and depression in psoriasis patients, uncovering the potency of proinflammatory cytokines measurement for monitoring or even preventing psoriasis patients' anxiety and depression.
