ObjectiveWe examined developmental aspects of the emotional awareness of adolescents by evaluating their responses to a self-reported questionnaire based on the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20).MethodsThe items of the TAS-20 were modified to make them more understandable by adolescents, and nine new items related to a limited capacity for imagination were added. The Japanese Linguistic Ability Test and the multi-dimensional empathy scale for adolescents were administered to examine concurrent validity. Two hundred and two normative young adolescents and thirty-two adolescent patients with psychosomatic and/or behavioral problems participated in the study. Eighty junior high school students also participated in a separate examination of test-retest reliability.ResultsThirteen items were extracted after exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, and four core factors were identified in the resulting scale: Difficulty Identifying Feelings (DIF), Difficulty Describing Feelings (DDF), Externally-Oriented Thinking (EOT) and Constricted Imaginal Capacities (CIC). Interestingly, scores on the multi-dimensional empathy scale correlated positively with DIF and DDF, but negatively with EOT and CIC. Higher DDF scores were associated with higher Japanese linguistic abilities. DIF/DDF scores were higher for females than males, irrespective of linguistic ability. Test-retest reliability coefficients were significant. The patient group showed significantly higher DIF scores than the normative students.ConclusionThe present findings indicated that subjective difficulties in identifying and describing feelings are associated with empathetic and linguistic abilities. The developmental aspect to emotional awareness herein described suggests that self-reported questionnaires for alexithymia must be carefully constructed and examined, even for adults.

The echo patterns of diffuse thyroid lesions in children are not yet well known. We present here the ultrasound findings of 32 children aged 5 to 15 years with a newly diagnosed diffuse thyroid disease. 23 patients had thyromegaly by palpation, 9 had hypothyroidism but no goiter. Of the 23 goitrous patients 9 were hypo-, 3 hyper-and 11 euthyroid. The 9 with hypothyroidism had all autoimmune thyroiditis as judged by antithyroid antibodies, and confirmed cytologically in 5. They had all 9 a hypoechogenic patchy, partly nodular thyroid by ultrasound.2 of the 3 with Graves disease had initially a similar pattern than in thyroiditis, the 3rd showed hypoechogenity later. Of the 11 euthyroid patients 8 had antithyroid antibodies and the ultrasound suggested thyroiditis in 5 of them, 3 were judged normal (2 and 1 became later hypothyroid). Of the 3 patients with euthyroid goiter but without antithyroid antibodies the ultrasound finding was normal in 1, showed multicystic thyroid in 1 and suggested thyroiditis in 1 who later had antithyroid antibodies. Of the 9 hypothyroid patients without thyromegaly one had an unusually small hit otherwise normal thyroid by ultrasound. The others had an echopoor thyroid, but the patchy and nodular pattern was often less marked than in goitrous hypothyroidism. We conclude that autoimmune thyroiditis gives a typical ultrasound pattern, and ultrasonography gives useful information especially of euthyroid goiter and nongoitrous hypothyroidism. Data collected in Zaire suggested that severe iodine deficiency resulted in neonatal hypothyroidism and its longterm consequence, endemic cretinism. Abstract. To investigate the regulatory role of head activator (HA) and its synthetic analogue, (Arg1,Phe5)-HA(AHA) on brain cell growth, we measured serial uptakes of [3H]thymidine, [3H]uridine and [3H]leucine and changes in cyclic AMP content in cultured chick embryo brain cells. HA stimulated all of these uptakes at a concentration of 10−10m, while 10−9m AHA suppressed them. The stimulatory effect of HA on [3H]thymidine uptake was observed after 4 h of the treatment, reached a maximum of 200% of the initial value at 8 h and declined to the pre-treatment level at 14 h. [3H]uridine uptake began to increase after 6 h of HA treatment, and the effect lasted for 4 h. Increase in [3H]leucine followed after 12 h and sustained for 4 h. Prior to the initiation of HA stimulation, cyclic AMP also began to rise, reaching 170% of the pre-treatment level at 6 h. In contrast, depression of [3H]thymidine uptake by AHA was noted at 6 h and continued for 8 h. Uptake of [3H]uridine and [3H]leucine showed similar tendency. Cyclic AMP in AHA-treated cells at 6 h was significantly lower than that in non-treated cells. These results indicate that HA stimulates DNA, RNA and protein synthesis in an early stage of growing brain cells, in which cAMP may be involved as a regulator of nerve cell growth.
