It has been shown that ferritic -martensitic (FyM) steels with 12 wt% Cr can form a protective oxide layer depending on the CO 2 purity from the first stages of oxidation. The impurities which could explain this difference could be O 2 . In the case where O 2 concentration in the gas phase was significant (4ppm), a thick duplex oxide layer was observed, whereas, if the O 2 concentration was low (5ppm), a Cr rich oxide layer about hundred times thinner was formed. These results strongly suggested that O 2 reacted before CO 2 on the steel surface and that the protective oxide layer was formed by reactions between chromium and O 2 .
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
