The role of clinical audit in the NHS is continuously gaining momentum as an important tool for the maintainence of high standards in an ever-pressing environment of increasing expectations and restricted resources (Jamtvedt et al, 2006). Furthermore, the impact of clinical governance and a need to demonstrate hard evidence of good practice, as well as compliance with clinical guidelines, has highlighted the importance of the audit process.
