Burghclere and its audiencesThe Great War was largely fought by citizen armies of conscripts and volunteers. It is well known that these armies were decimated in a static war of attrition and military failure. More than one million soldiers from the British Empire and over two million from Germany were killed. In Britain, over 30 per cent of the male population aged between twenty and twenty-four in 1914 died in the war.
