In the context of the role of culture in language learning, many textbook analysts have so far investigated the representations of cultures in EFL textbooks. Most of the previous findings on the study of culture indicate that EFL textbooks contain more about the cultures of inner circle countries compared to the expanding and outer circle countries. In Indonesia, this area of cultural issues in English textbooks appears to be underexplored. To narrow the gap, this study using the visual semiotic theory of Barthes (1977) examined the multicultural values represented in an Indonesian vocational high school English textbook through the visual images in the textbook. This study shows that there are four categories of multicultural values represented in the EFL textbook: respecting other people’s tradition, appreciating other people’s perspectives, appreciating other people’s cultural products, and appreciating women’s equal rights. These insights give students opportunities to enhance their intercultural communication competence (ICC) by appreciating cultural diversity and accepting racial and religious differences around them.

This research was intended to describe the eleventh-grade students’ perception on the use of Google Classroom in online English learning at SMAN 1 Ngoro Mojokerto. Hence, this research used a descriptive research design because the objective of the study was to describe the students’ perception on the use of Google Classroom for online English learning during the pandemic. The data of this research were collected from the questionnaire. Further, the data of the research was calculated in the form of percentages and analyzed using quantitative analysis. The finding and discussion described the appropriateness of comfort, the content, efficient in use, language in Google Classroom application, clarity of the material, and fun to use. The result of the research showed that overall, the majority of the students had positive responses to every indicator and agreed that Google Classroom could facilitate them in an English classroom during pandemic situations. This classroom action research was aimed to improve the tenth grade students’ reading comprehension achievement by animated video caption at MAM 01 Jember. It was conducted collaboratively with the English teacher. The research participants were X IPS 1 students of MAM 01 Jember. The result of observation in cycle 1 and cycle 2 showed that students could work well and the students active participation improved from 78% in cycle 1 to 84% in cycle 2. Besides, there were 75% of 16 students who achieved the target score that was  ≥70 in cycle 1. In cycle 2, there were 81% of 16 students who achieved the target scores. It means that there was improvement of the students’ reading comprehension achievement in cycle 1 to cycle 2. It can be concluded that the implementation of animated video caption could improve X IPS 1 grade students’ reading comprehension achievement and their active participation in joining teaching learning process of reading.

Abstract This paper reports the analysis of ELT textbook for the eighth graders of Junior High School. We examined the extent of gender representation from the visual and textual materials in the textbook, in terms of the involvement of male and female gender in stereotypical and non-stereotypical areas. For that, Critical Discourse Analysis was used as the research design in this study, and Fairclough’s 1995 Three-Dimensional Model that consists of three stages of analysis (Description, Interpretation, Explanation) was applied as the data analysis method. The result shows that the representation of female visually and textually has already shown a good sign of gender representation for females were pictured in stereotypical and non-stereotypical areas. Meanwhile, for males, their representation is good textually, but visually they are still underrepresented, as males were only pictured in stereotypical area. However, when compared to the findings of previous studies, we found that the extent of gender stereotyping has reduced to some extent.
