Problem statement: Developing agriculture by disseminating the right information to the right groups has proven to be an effective strategy. In Malaysia, there are a number of sources; either mass media or personal sources that disseminate the agriculture information. The rural community, a group which are highly related to agriculture certainly have a pivotal need for agriculture information. Besides the existence of numerous sources of agriculture information, do the rural community especially those who living along Pahang and Muar Rivers have received adequate agriculture information from the mass media and interpersonal sources? This study would provide the answer for the query. Approach: This is a quantitative study, where a developed questionnaire was employed to gain the data needed. Through a simple random sampling, 900 respondents were selected. The respondents selected were among the villagers that live along Pahang and Muar Rivers. Descriptive and inferential analyses were employed to achieve the objectives determined. Results: Based on the results, rural community living along Pahang and Muar rivers do receive agriculture information at a high level from television, newspaper, family members, friends and village leaders and village administration members. Further analysis employed has proven that there is significant difference in receiving the agriculture information from mass media and interpersonal sources among rural communities in the three districts studied. Conclusion/Recommendation: It is recommended that brochures/pamphlets that contain information on the list of agriculture programs available on television, radio, newspaper and internet can be produced by the concern parties and distributed to the rural people. The concern parties in agricultural delivery system are recommended to employ the media that are pertinent in fulfilling rural community needs.
The main aim of this study is to identify the quality of life (QoL) among communities residing near the Tembeling, Pahang and Muar Rivers in Malaysia. This quantitative study used a constructed questionnaire as main tool to collect data on the QoL of river communities. A total of 240 villagers were selected as respondents. The results indicated that the dimensions of settlement, safety, involvement and social relationships, as well as education scored highest, while dimensions of physical environment, financial and job security yielded moderate scores. Dimensions of infrastructure facilities yielded a low mean score. Recommendations are provided, in the hope that our results may be useful for strategies that could enhance QoL of these river communities.
This paper is concerned with the socio-economic impacts of agro-tourism activities in coastal villages listed as Desa Wawasan Nelayan (DWN) in Malaysia. The paper discussed the impacts of the two major components of socio-economics dynamics, namely social and economic activities. This account highlights a number of discussions with specific reference to DWN in Malaysia. It identifies the similarities and differences with regard to socio-economic impact, and it is expected that these points will be of practical use for other agrotourism areas around the globe, and help to increase interest in agro-tourism activities.
Agro-tourism is a tool that has been widely used around the world for the purpose of intensifying the socioeconomic aspects of the local community. Malaysia is supportive of this tool. The main objective of this paper is to unveil the potential socioeconomic benefits that can be offered by the agro-tourism activities to progressive fishing communities or locally known as Desa Wawasan Nelayan1 community in Malaysia. Data were gathered through document analyses. The qualitative studies concluded that agro-tourism can be the impetus for sustainable development of Desa Wawasan Nelayan community.The benefits include enhancing their social empowerment system, strengthening their social ties and developing their social skills and relationships, increasing the income of local community, diversifying and intensifying the economic activities, providing job opportunities and alleviation of poverty. Thus, agro-tourism has the potential to raise the consciousness of the selected community regarding sustainable development.
Problem statement: Malaysia has achieved a number of successes in its transportation development. The success of Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Northern and Southern Highway project for example have given the community a lot of benefits in term of social and economic development, but what if an inland waterway system can be developed in Malaysia especially along the Pahang River and Muar River. Can this proposed waterway bring significant impact to local people in term of their social and economic development? This has become the main objective of this study which is to investigate whether the future Pahang Muar Waterway could have significant socioeconomic impact on the local community or not. Approach: This is a qualitative study. Observations, structured and unstructured in-depth interview and literature analysis were used to gain the data needed and the research team had traversed along these rivers (Muar to Bahau and ended in Pekan). For the indepth interviews, a total of seventeen informants among the public and government officers were selected. Data from the in-depth interviews were transcribed verbatim and subsequently analyzed by identifying similarities and consistent themes. A constant comparative method was employed in order to uncover patterns in the data. The data in this study is presented descriptively. Results: From the observation, interviews and literature analysis done, it can be concluded that the Pahang Muar Waterways is believed to develop economic activities, recreational activities, tourism industry, enhance the socio-economic life of local community and provide sustainable mobility. Conclusion/Recommendations: From the results gained, it can be concluded that a majority of the community interviewed believed that Pahang Muar waterways offer a vast opportunity for social and economic development for the local community. It can be noted that specific planning on constructing the inland waterways should be started by the local authorities. It is recommended that specific studies on the feasibility of inland waterways in Malaysia in term of technicality, environmental impact, social development and economic development should be initiated.
