In trod uc ti onThe Research Institute for Cooperatives of the University of Vienna headed by Prof. Wilhelm Weber has published an excellent collection of articles analysing the progress of consumer cooperative movements in nine Western European countries plus Japan (Brazda & Schediwy, 1989). The movements are analysed by tracing their historical development and attempting t o identify the critical decisions that have fostered or retarded their progress. The two volumes provide a rich description of the rise and fall of the various movements. With the exception of a few glaring mistakes', the authors provide a good historical summary that frames the discussion of the present problems. The book is straight forward in identifying the critical issues and does not gloss over current problems. It also * We have been assisted in the preparation of this article by a number of cooperative leaders of Western European Movements who helpfully responded to a questionnaire we had circulated to them.
This study provides a project-based learning case study of the design of data acquisition module for the greenhouse system. The project-based learning environment is provided to the final year undergraduate engineering students where the students try to develop a prototype of a greenhouse system equipped with various sensors and actuators. The learning target is to develop a fully functional laboratory prototype of the greenhouse with sensors and actuators and perform data acquisition and data logging operations in the greenhouse. In addition to the development of hardware prototype, the students are encouraged to learn the theory and modeling aspects behind the problem. The result of the project-based learning approach has been encouraging since the students were able to design the working prototype of the greenhouse with basic control functionalities.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
