In this study, W. Edwards Deming's management philosophy was examined for its adaptability to higher education institutions. Triangulation, or the use of multiple methods, was utilised to formulate valid propositions and reveal different aspects of the empirical reality. The study created three sources of data: 1. quantitative findings from 44 items listed on a research questionnaire; 2. qualitative findings from two open-ended questions on the questionnaire; 3. qualitative findings from a thematic analysis of the related literature. Comparisons of the triangulation results revealed five major Deming themes adaptable to higher education: purpose, co-operative systems, improvement, leadership, and methods-processes. Limitations are primarly focused on establishing meaningful systemic change.

The intent of this study is to examine the relationship between perceived environmental stress and family social climate according to stage in the life cycle for families living in similar space arrangements in multifamily dwellings. Eighty-four randomly selected families living in similar married-student housing units located in a large midwestem university were interviewed using two questionnaires: Family Space Inventory (FSI) (Melson & Kemp, 1976) and The Family Environment Scale (FES) (Moos, 1974). Results of the FSI indicate that early-stage families perceived less stress in their residential setting and made fewer adaptations to their dwellings than did crowded-stage families. Results of the FES in this study indicate that high cohesiveness and expressiveness as well as low conflict are integrated dimensions of family social climate. Early-stage families are more cohesive, more expressive, and more independent than crowded-stage families.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
