AbstractOur contribution results from the need to reflect on the object of study of research that we are developing. We are considering artistic manifestations/initiatives generally understood as alternatives/underground, whose emergence is based on do-it-yourself logics; they are materialized as multi/transdisciplinary art and they are based on pluralism and experimentation. The consolidation of these manifestations in contemporary Portugal implies a discussion of the concepts which are inherent to its problematization as object of study. From the reflection initiated and shared here, we try to demonstrate, from the analysis of contents produced by a set of media devices, an approximate operationalization through a brief mapping of the artistic manifestations.

From the study of multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary urban artistic manifestations that are present in the Portuguese contemporaneity, we discuss the relevance of the epithet of artistic alternative; specially in a social model that is characterized by hybridism and i tis affected by transversal processes of commodification, massification and institutionalization. Largely eroded by these processes, the term alternative within the artistic field implies an updated revisiting effort. The reflection around the actuality of the artistic alternative, as an enhancer of an artistic subfield, results from an investigation on a set of artistic manifestations (multiple case study) – festivals and urban artistic spaces – distributed throughout the national territory, The emergence of these manifestations is based on do-it-yourself (DIY) logics, artistic experimentation and eclecticism, and disruptive dynamics in relation to structures and institutionalized normative processes (of the market or institutions) that develop new forms of production and circulation of artistic works.

The study of urban artistic manifestations shows that their relationship with the territories where they are located or take place is characterised by being dialogic, since they are mutually relevant and beneficial. The inscription of these manifestations in the territory will result in the consubstantiation of a particularly characteristic dimension of these manifestations: their alternative inclination. Based on the intensive study of a set of cases, distributed throughout the national territory, we seek to demonstrate, based on the social representations of the interviewed actors/agents, how the cases are demarcated in the territory and configure alternative obliquities
